It literally takes more effort to tear it if it's hanging in front. When it hangs from the back, you use the weight of the roll to tear.

It is, the roll moves more smoothly when it hangs from behind. I like the huge MEGA rolls (because I'm super lazy and want to change the roll a little as possible) but when you put a new MEGA roll in the holder it's in there pretty snug. If I hang it over, the first few times I use it the resistance to turning the roll means it tears too easily and I only get one square at a time. If I hang it under it dispenses normally despite the resistance.

I used to be an over hanger, but mega rolls converted me to an under hanger.
