So redoing my mom's internet setup. I got a Nighthawk R8000. Cox gave her some 3-in-1 whatever piece and said the other modem I had in there was obsolete, which is probably true as it's 6+ years old. 1. What's a good standard modem that will handle most anything? There is a lot of people using the WIFI at once. She doesn't have any crazy super high speed internet though. 2. I'm moving the setup to a more central point in the living room. There's a coax cable for the TV already. Is there any issue splitting the signal? I was thinking maybe run a separate line for both--is that needed? If it's fine splitting what's a good one to get? If there's anything else I need to know lmk

Probably use that and the Nighthawk since they're supposed to be really good routers. She's archaic and I'm trying to get her to get rid of her phone line, which was part of the reasoning for the 3-in-1. So now there will be a coax cable where her office/computer, is so unless we run an ethernet cable that'll need a whole other separate modem for VOIP? She says she just needs fax, which she really doesn't, but whatever. What are the good online fax services I can try to coerce her into using that simple enough for a grandma?

Also landline jacks. I'm assuming you mean you want a router to attach to that? It would run off the ethernet connection.

She's renting the 3-in-1, so would be returning that and using the Nighthawk router and modem suggested above. In the living room, where those will be going, there is a TV w/cable. So I would run a splitter at the coax to go to both the modem and TV cable box

Nostalgia4Dogges posted:-missed the edit Get rid of her phone line, and get Vonage or whatever, it takes an ethernet cable from your router into the vonage box and it has 2x regular phone jack outputs, and fax works fine on it. She won't notice any difference between vonage or whatever and what she has currently, but the Vonage bill will be about half what she pays now for her phone. Same dial tone, same call functionality, everything works just like normal, even 911 works, as setting a 911 address is part of the initial setup (which you will do if you are a good son). E: yeah return the drat 3 in one, get Vonage, and use her internet to carry her phone without bundling the phone in, they probably charge more than the vonage bill for the rental of the 3 in one and the bundle in of phone service. Splitters work fine for internet, just don't put too many splitters on and have your modem as close to the run out (on the first splitter, or ideally on its own jack if possible) of the house as possible. Each splitter drops your signal by about 3.5 dB, so putting the modem behind two splitters drops your signal by a third. orange juche fucked around with this message at 01:52 on Feb 7, 2017 |

Another option because Vonage seems expensive when compared to something like OBi + google voice which = no monthly payment.

Yeah the issue is her fax machine is in her room/office which is a bit away from where I plan on setting everything up. So we'd have to run an ethernet line through the attic or maybe try one of those powerline adapter. The line to the living room is fairly close to the source and I don't think it is split before that, so it would be the first split on that line. Are splitters mostly the same or are their ones that will carry/boost the signal a bit more? Would the quality of internet via splitter still be affected if no one is watching cable TV?

So we'd have to run an ethernet line through the attic or maybe try one of those powerline adapter. Splitters are mostly the same, there may be really lovely ones that drop more dB (the dB loss will be stamped on the splitter body somewhere), but there are powered coax amps if you are going to be using a lot of splitters. The street box should be good for a cable modem and 3 TVs minimum, which should satisfy almost any house. You won't experience any signal gain/loss if people are watching TV, it's the splitters themselves that drop the signal strength, and the only thing that would happen with the cable modem losing signal strength due to too many splitters, is it might take a bit of a hit on speed or you might experience a drop once in a long while, but sunspots and poo poo will do that anyways. The only general rule is modem on first splitter before anything else. Once you get your ethernet off your modem, you only have to worry about the 300 ft limit for CAT5/CAT6 transmission. The other general rule is the more complicated you make this poo poo, the more time you will spend working on it for free when your mom has a problem with it. orange juche fucked around with this message at 03:26 on Feb 7, 2017 |

Alright, thanks for the help! It'll be source > splitter > modem and cable TV box so should be alright then. Only issue is figuring out the phone if she absolutely must keep it. So probably a powerline Ethernet adapter, don't think we can relocate the fax/printer. That should work fine for this no? Nostalgia4Dogges fucked around with this message at 03:34 on Feb 7, 2017 |

You can buy more adapters if you need them. E: if you're worried about people getting into your network, use the ones that use encryption to protect the powerline signal, but I don't really see a problem with the cheaper one. orange juche fucked around with this message at 03:42 on Feb 7, 2017 |

I don't get how that poo poo works at all. Blows my mind So probably have the modem/router in the living room coming off the splitter, and then run a powerline adapter from the router to the room where the fax/phone is so the Ethernet can go into the VOIP modem there?

It's all copper lines anyhow. I've read that they can be problematic if you're trying to run them to rooms on the opposite sides of the junction box but IDK if there's any truth, and if your house has realllly old wiring it can be kinda poo poo too. I've considered trying them out with wifi extenders but I'm not there yet.

Nostalgia4Dogges posted:I don't get how that poo poo works at all. Blows my mind Yeah pretty much, if you can run everything else off of wifi, do so. It is much easier to worry about wifi than loving with wired networking, if it were a new house I would say to get the electrician to wire up a networking closet but eh. Its not worth running wired poo poo in an old house unless you're a network guru.

Used to be a "network closet" in the garage. But the wifi was poo poo from the garage so I had to put a LAN router in it to run the ethernet to a more central point where the wifi router could be. It worked well enough but Cox removed it all and IDK. The wiring is still there but I'd have to start at the garage again and yeah this is probably the easiest way. Are powerlines pretty efficient? The living room spot to where the phone that needs ethernet would be is about, oh, 30 meters? Not like it needs crazy bandwith or anything so I can just get a low tier one. This would be the complete opposite side of the house where the "junction box" is.

It's definitely good enough for what you're looking for, the cheapest ones are 200mbps, but it varies depending on if your lines are garbage, but VOIP and a fax line doesn't take more than 64kbit/s, which is not even a drop in the bucket of the capacity of even the cheapest powerline adapter.
