FishBulb posted:The democrats have been moving to the right and appealing to republicans since Reagan. Reagan beat them so bad they decided they couldn't win on even moderately leftist policies and decided to just be republicans but a little less bad. It's how we got a world of deregulation, decreased social services, harsh drug laws and massive incarceration and a corporate hand out healthcare reform despite having 16 years of democratic presidents in there. I'd say it began earlier than that, when it became clear at the end of the sixties that there was no further progress to be made with the New Deal/Great Society welfare state without seriously infringing on the interests of property. They stuck their toes in the water of socialism and decided they didn't want to take a swim, and the only place to go then was right. Keep in mind it was Carter who set the era of deregulation into motion by beginning dereg of the oil and transportation industries, and that he appointed Paul Volcker to the Fed. TrixRabbi posted:The Dems kept moving to the right thinking there was a center to be won over, but in reality the center right just became more extreme and the wingnuts became full-blown doomsday race-war cultists. McGovern also lost on social issues and foreign policy, his economic position wasn't a major part of the campaign. In any case it included trying to replace welfare with a negative income tax style system, and wasn't appreciably farther left than the status quo at the time.

I don't think you were alive in the 80s (or were very small and don't really remember) because this is flat out untrue. It's fantasy land. Things are starting to look unclear if I'm gonna have a place to live next week. So far the best place we've found won't be ready for a month, but we have to be out by next Wednesday and can't really afford to stay at a hotel for a month and even though we have family in the area, even with them it's hard to convince them to take us and our two cats in. Maybe we can find a better place in the next few days but to put it mildly, this is really worrying

Jeez, fellas, I did say a progressive Christian. I take the various points about the futility of trying to appeal to or accommodate the right, but I was aiming more at the centrists for whom the Republicans are now a bit too crazy. I also agree with whomever posted about Trump calling fundamentalists' bluff; that was very well put. All that said, I'd still be interested to see a Democratic candidate who is genuinely progressive and Christian and can articulate the basis of their ideology with reference to their faith (even if it isn't wholly what informs them). Perhaps it's a wish fulfillment to see the Christian Right taken on using its own language and religion. I can't recall many politicians saying "We should help the poor and the weak because Jesus said so"; rather, it's "ban abortions and stone homosexuals because it's in the Bible".
