tf2's popularity was partially a product of its time. a lot of people dismissed it as too kiddy. remember that it launched into modern warfare

it was also marketed differently since tf2 was originally just a part of the orange box; it wasn't some flagship title. hell, most people only even played it at launch because they got it with episode 2. the tfc crowd sure as hell wasn't the biggest or most vocal group and tf2 was pretty different besides. overwatch has also been gunning for esports poo poo while valve has been really against the pro stuff in tf2

that said, tf2 is still pretty popular on steam and still sells a shitload of hats

The characters aren't, but the environments are. pits of gravel and sand and aged wood and scrap metal abound.

of course, for the most part this means the characters stand out against the environments which I'm sure was a large part of why it's like that

I liked TF2 for a while and came back to it years later to find the sheer number of sidegrades made keeping track of what was going on in a match futile. It was fine when it was just stuff like "this is a demoman who's really good at melee, you can tell because his model has a shield" but at some point they took it a bit far.

Tf2 grew because is was actually a good game. Overwatch is huge because it's a broadly appealing game made by Blizzard. So uh yeah tf2 is better thanks for listening. The f2p crap will/did sink both games in the end.

TF2 releasing a week after the Fortress Forever mod was the biggest dunking on another multiplayer game until Overwatch continually counter-scheduled against all of Battleborn's poo poo over a period of months

Battleborn was a case of self-dunking with player pools segregated by country, a match system where everyone lost if someone quit or even D/C'd, and balance issues so ingrained in the game's mission statement that they were an intentional part of the Season Pass.

Not to mention they didn't advertise what their game was at all. There was no indication that it wasn't really anything like Overwatch besides being a multiplayer shooter. And it also didn't help that not only did that not advertise what it actually was, they constantly tried to throw shade AT Overwatch as if they were competing games. Blizzard just took advantage of that.

They really shot themselves in the foot by trying to market themselves as a rival to Overwatch. It had a ton of other problems too but I feel like that was the thing that killed them. I guess there was also an issue where you were FORCED to do a long single player tutorial in the game before you even had access to most of the characters.

Wasn't Fortress Forever intentionally released next to TF2 out of spite for TF2? I recall a few people insisting it would be the one true successor to TFC.

Until everyone realised TF2 was pretty good and FF became a wasteland, I guess.

what the gently caress, who could possibly think that was a good idea? Overwatch is already bad enough about leavers when the leaver gets extra penalty and the opponent team gets an easy win. With BB's system, you'd see leavers in every single match.

TF2 had to fight up the hill that it wasn't exactly a number-for-number remake of TF1/TFC with prettier graphics. That's basically what I expected in TF2 for Quake II that never came to fruition, and TF2 for Half-Life that I guess did actually kind of come to fruition since by that point "TF2" was some Battlefield-inspired nonsense.

Overwatch isn't a number-for-number recreation of TF1/TFC, but at the same time it doesn't have loadouts which I guess is all I really needed. If I see Reaper, I know exactly what he's going to do. He's not going to pull out the Shotgun that's +2 against DVa that he got out of a blind box.

I'm not one of those people that automatically buys every game because it has the Blizzard name on it (I was for like a year and a half, and then I bought Diablo II and went "this is not for me.") But they do exist.
Overwatch enjoys their support.

There are no people like that for Gearbox.

But there are people who will buy no Gearbox game, no matter what it is or how many people talk about it, because the company is blacklisted in their brain for too many years of failure. I actually am one of those people.
Battleborn enjoyed our "support".

Honestly It's not surprising.

Like looking at a picture of TF2's cast , them all being dudes is such a glaring limitation on character design, and you can kind of tell that they were designed in a vacuum, like I wouldn't be surprised if the idea to make someone a woman even ever came up.

Actually Valve put an insane amount of thought into TF2's cast and it is one of the best designed games in the history of multiplayer games in general.

Things like "it needs to be easy to tell who you are looking at, what weapon they're carrying, and what team they're on instantaneously" took priority over "hmm we don't have any waifus and this is a problem" however.

Part of the issue is that the original Team Fortress came out during a time where most games (especially pc games) were only vaguely aware women existed at all.

The silhouette design in TF2 is really well thought-out, yeah, I remember seeing a GDC presentation about how much effort went into that. But the fandom was never gonna latch on to them the way they have with the Overwatch characters just in terms of range of personalities and backgrounds.

Or maybe that's just because TF2 was just slightly before the rise of social media and the people who played it in their teens are now pushing 30

For the degree to which social media was a thing TF2's characters were pretty popular actually

Aren't a many of the Overwatch characters very obviously inspired by a TF2 character/a specific load out? I mean, you have things like Medic/Mercy or Demoman/Junkrat, but even Phara is basically a soldier with rocket jump being turned into a dedicated ability and Reinhard feels very much inspired by the Demoknight loadout. There are a coupe of other similarities, but those are the ones I had to immediately think of when I first saw the Overwatch cast.

Dead weight, just like this post.

Battleborn is a great game in it's own right for a completely different reason from Overwatch. It's just a shame that it got completely hosed by it's own developers.

It's like the only MOBA i've ever played that i can stand for whatever reason and even if the character designs aren't as clean and pretty as Overwatch's i still think they pretty good overall.

Although i will admit a lot of that is me liking the Borderlands style of humor, which definintly isn't for everybody. But i like both games plenty so i guess i'm just wierd
