I actually tried that online chat thing on their website - they said there is a problem with that data reporting right now. I'm actually surprised that the chat thing worked, I was half expecting the typical "Hello, did you turn your phone on and off again?" bullshit, but they were right to the point and basically said "Yeah, there's something wrong on our end with data reporting and it's gonna take awhile to fix."

I don't have warm-fuzzy feelings, but I am kinda' impressed I was able to communicate with either a very realistic/competent AI construct, or a human being who was competent. I'm just used to mind-boggling incompetence from my past phone support experience.

Yeah, their site was pretty messed up on Wednesday.

I popped in to check and see if I had a ship date for my XL and saw there were two orders that weren't mine shipped to New York (a 7+ and a case) on there. Quick checked the bill and didn't see anything unusual and gave them a call right quick. Their internal system showed the orders correct, but something in the website broke pretty interestingly.

I'm curious as to whether or not they prioritize traffic on their towers.

One employee told me that post-paid have the highest priority, followed by prepaid and then the lowest priority goes to 3rd party carriers like straight talk, cricket etc. I wouldn't be surprised if so.

FCKGW

That seems like a nightmare and highly unlikely. They would have inspect every single radio connecting to their tower and check account types and standing.

Edit: although I suppose that's what they do already

I imagine someone has written QoS rules based on IMEI.

They already restrict your roaming capabilities based on your service tier, so it's not a huge stretch.

Sprint's commercial for one of their super-cheap unlimited plans had a disclaimer that said your data may get reprioritized on a congested tower if a higher-tier user's device has a demand.

At the end of the day, if a tower is at the level of utilization where that level of tiered QoS is necessary, everyone on it is probably having a bad experience.

I'm pretty sure that they do this. At least the price differences between prepaid and postpaid are seen in customer service and promotions easily. MVNOs require the use of their SIM cards which makes it real easy for QoS rules.

I have a Verizon S7. I read that they are unlocked. Just want to make sure. If I go to Thailand/Japan and shove SIM cards in it, I'll be all right? I won't get 4g, but I will have 3g and maps, which is the main thing I care about.

On my previous trips to Asia I've rented a pocket wifi and/or used an unlocked ATT iphone. So those worked just fine. I'd rather not have extra poo poo to carry around.

Clue: Zero
They already do priority service for Homeland Security/Emergency Services (https://www.dhs.gov/wireless-priority-service-wps) and I'm too lazy to track down the relevant docs but I'm pretty sure 911 calls will also punt anything else out of their way if resources are limited. It doesn't seem a stretch to allow priorities to differ for other services.

Military communication systems also do this. There are five levels:

FLASH OVERRIDE (Y) (Messages from POTUS that override all other comms)
FLASH (Z)
IMMEDIATE (O)
PRIORITY (P)
ROUTINE (R)

I believe the FLASH and FLASH OVERRIDE levels are mainly for if we're going to start catching and throwing nukes between countries or situations that otherwise require immediate response.

Man I got some attitude at a corporate store this week. Look, it sucks that your metrics probably count downgrading service as a negative because you weren't able to retain or upsell, but that's not my problem and don't make it my problem.

I had a 2nd line on my account for about a year. It was mostly because we were aquired by a new company, they were giving compensation for cell service depending on position, and I didn't like the MDM software they were using. So, I just added a second line and threw work stuff on a spare phone.

Well, fast forward to this year. We've transitioned to O365 so I only have to worry about InTune instead of Airwatch, I can use the exchange client of my choice (nine) and I'm on a phone that has no encryption performance penalty (Pixel.) Plus, I have a better read on the company's policies and how things are handled So, I feel pretty OK about having work email on my own device now. So, I don't need that $20 line access charge anymore which is just bumping me over what the company comps for service. I was willing to pay it when I had things fully separate, but now it's not necessary.

There's a Verizon corp store across the street from my office so I run over there at lunch to drop the line. The store was completely empty, not a soul was around. I walk in and the rep asks why I'm there. I tell her I'm there to drop a line off my account. She takes my info and my ID and I show what number. She asks why (which I understand) and I truthfully tell her I have no use for it anymore. Ok, so far so good. Then I'm asked if I wanted to switch it to a tablet. "No thank you" I say "I can just tether off my phone if my tablet needs internet." Then I'm asked about moving the line to Hum. Again, I politely refuse. At that point the demeanor completely changed. "Wait here" and she disappears. Comes back a few minutes later with a receipt and hands it to me and very curtly says "Just so you know, you can call and do this over the phone and save everyone the trouble" and walks away.

I can't say I'm surprised with this store though, I haven't really ever had a good experience with them over the past 5 years or so. They've outright refused to sell me phones at full retail before and they are fond of pushing for a new SIM on every account change so they can add an activation fee.

Yeah go to a different store. None of that would be a huge effect to me. Also, not sure on those activation fees, I don't follow how they are doing that unless they are adding and cancelling on your account.

Although I also won't sell phones at full retail. It's one thing that both doesn't pay and hurts metrics.

No reason to be rude either way though.

I'm in upgrade hell atm. When the Droid Turbo came out, I purchased up front on a 2yr contract. Phone was replaced under warranty about 18 months ago. I'm well out of contract (plan shows month-to-month) and being told I'm not eligible for a new phone upgrade because the phone is on a payment plan. For giggles, I asked what was due on the payment plan. $0. Nobody can seem to get around a $0 payment or explain why there's a payment plan. I spent 30 minutes with a phone rep and the store can't figure it out.

One of my coworker's had a tablet with LTE and he would suspend the account when he really didn't need it. He went into the store at lunch to turn the service back on and they reprovisioned a brand new sim even though the device already had one and charged him an activation fee on it.

Not doing stuff like selling phones at full retail is a great way to drive foot traffic away from a store. That just encourages me to order online and have it shipped overnight for free.

They even once cancelled an order on me that I ordered for in store pickup because I didn't want to switch over it it right away. I was leaving on a trip in a few hours and really didn't want to take the time to swap over to a new device. I just wanted to go pick up the phone and take care of it on Sunday when I got back. NOPE. They told me that unless I switched over to it right that moment, that I wasn't leaving the store with it. So I didn't.

Not that it matters anymore anyways since I'll likely never buy a branded device as a primary device again. I did recently break that promise by buying a Moto Z on black friday, but that was only $110. Gotta love how best buy only puts the promo cost of the device on your plan and doesn't go the bill credit route. I was able to pay it off right away.

Eh, people are still going to do what makes them commission. My stance tends to be if you're going to do something like add and cancel a tab, you credit the fee if it wasn't supposed to be there. So yeah, is what it is.

The right fix is Verizon offering incentives to fix behavior. They didn't offer you an in store pickup because it doesn't pay the rep commission. Verizon (finally) addressed it by offering a spiff for in store pickups. I agree it isn't fair for the customer, but the issue is more holes in Verizon's compensation that cause it to happen.

Thankfully issues like that (like in store pickup) mostly get fixed.

An unexpected package arrived today. A Daydream VR headset with a letter from Verizon apologizing for the delay. I guess talking to customer service is worth something now and then.

For the record, I didn't bitch about the delay, but the lack of communication. I logged in the day after my initial expected to ship date (which was already 6 weeks after my order) only to find a new ship date 6 weeks farther out. Zero communication.

I am hoping that Verizon either does something like doubles the data allocation per tier or reduces costs considering I can potentially get a much better deal now if I switch to TMobile. There are new reports that their network is reaching parity with Verizon's.

However, right now the saving grace for Verizon, from my personal experience, is customer service and reliability. Even for the savings I may not be willing to sacrifice that.

As someone who switched in the other direction, from T-Mo to Vz, the consistency and availability of signal on Verizon's a lot better. T-Mobile occasionally works indoors or in valleys if it feels like it, and with severe network congestion you can forget anything that isn't a 911 call.

My wife has an iPhone 6s that i bought for her unlocked from Apple back in October. We put the SIM from her dead iPhone 6 into the phone and everything seemed fine. Except it isn't. Text messages (not iMessage) have a delayed arrival. iMessage works just fine. When she sends a text they arrive at the destination almost immediately like normal. When a text message is sent to her, they arrive several hours later. If multiple messages are sent from multiple numbers to her, they all arrive at once, but several hours after being sent. It's almost like they are queued up on Verizon's end and all get pushed to her phone at once.

i've tried using DFU mode to restore the phone's software to no avail. Yesterday we went to the Verizon store and they replaced the SIM card, but this did not fix the problem. We've reset the network settings on the phone multiple times including twice at the Verizon store, before and after the new SIM. Still no luck on fixing the problem. The Verizon guy suggested the antenna in the phone is damaged, causing the delay. She's called apple support previously and they said the phone's hardware is fine and its a problem on Verizon's end.

Anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Check the model number. There are actually two versions of the 6S, North America and European. The European one (which apple sometimes sells in the states as the unlocked version) does not work on Verizon. And what you're describing makes me think that's the issue.

If it's not that, I would get apple to swap it. You'll be kind of hosed otherwise, Apple and Verizon will both point fingers at the other.

I would think if the phone model is a European version then nothing on it would work. It has full LTE data coverage as well as 3G and CDMA. Phone calls work fine. Also, the messages do arrive, just after several hours. I would think if the handset isn't compatible then the messages wouldn't come through at all.

Phone model is A1633.

My question is: where does an access discount factor in? I currently have 4 lines with $20 access fee per month, and then the $70 Large plan which gets discounted by 17%. If I were to entertain the idea of the unlimited plan at $45 per line, I wonder if the discount applies to the total amount or if it's somehow still broken down to $20 line access fees per line and then $25 per line for the data plan -- the latter receiving my discount.

I guess I'll see if they have a calculator/"what if" type tool to play with tomorrow.
