The WiiU was not a financial success and it didn't matter because it had an awesome library. Now imagine that again but also with the possibility of a great 3DS library and maybe even more great third party games. I don't know about you but I am excited!!

I still think people should think about this as a portable system and not compare it to the PS4. If you're going to plug this into the dock and never unplug it again you're very much not the target market. In all likelihood, this is what is going to happen. It's going to be a hybrid console with a weird mix of strong Nintendo console games and 3DS-esque games. It'll probably do handheld level sales and have some cool ports.

There is also already a confirmed mainline Fire Emblem game and almost certainly a new Animal Crossing. Switch, even if it winds up being a turbo-charged 3DS, will be fine because the 3DS is amazing.

Why not just get a Steam Link?

I thought the Steam Link was pretty flawless in execution, but I never had any experience myself with one.

You need to have a wired connection but you really should have one of those regardless, especially if you're playing online. I do most of my multiplayer stuff at the actual computer so I can use a keyboard, but it rules for lazy couch rocket league and I loaded up TF2 and ended up at the top of the scoreboard using a contoller as a heavy. Some overwatch classes play fine with a controller too, like mercy and torbjorn.

I wish you could play hard mode in BotW from the start and it's kind of lame it's locked behind dlc, but Nintendo has been pretty reasonable about all their dlc so I'm still getting it all for BotW

This makes me want to wait to play BotW, since I'm really bad at revisiting games once later DLC comes out. But I'm basically buying the Switch for Zelda at the start, so... Hrmm, not sure what to do.

Disappointed that the Switch won't act as a second screen for maps/inventory. Playing through Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on the WiiU was loving magical. I giggled with glee the first time Link popped up on the gamepad when collecting a treasure chest. Is there a grip option for the Switch when playing in tablet mode? Something to make it more comfortable like the WiiU gamepad. This thing has conflicting pictures http://a.co/em53PCN

I must be getting old and curmudgeonly because all of my opinions now appear to be contrary ones but I'm rather upset that Hard Mode is behind a DLC paywall, even if Nintendo does have a good history of not-lousy DLC. I just think micro-transactions -> paid DLC -> rent seeking in general provide the wrong incentives for developers. Conversely (but still contrarily), I'm excited to see Unity and Unreal Engine build targets for the Switch out of the gate. I don't have much time for gaming anymore, so I tend to gravitate toward the quirky independent or small-studio stuff, and just about all of the indie/small studios use one of those two middlewares.

Nintendo is good and 2. making a Hard Mode can be done poorly (you take 10x damange now and everything else has 10x health) or done well (someone mentioned stuff like remixing thing, making stuff more scarce, moving stuff around etc), so I'm going to say I'm optimistic Nintendo will do it well and all that balancing and stuff does legitimately take more work and effort to make sure it's still fun, so if it's that I'll be happy and if it's stupid I'll be upset.

I'm over dual-screen gaming. It's never done anything egregiously offensive, other than Star Fox Zero, but it was unnecessary in most cases. Even supposed good uses like Zelda, where you can swap items without pausing seemed like a good idea at the time, but it doesn't actually make things easier. You still have to move your eyes to a second screen, which is more effort than just pressing start, and you can get hit by enemies while doing it.

It was nice in Monster Hunter to disable the UI from the top screen, I liked having the main game view have no indicators or whatever during most of the game (item stuff would still pop up), and you could glance at the bottom screen for the relevant info, but for the most part yeah. I'll miss the 3D though!

Every good use for "second screen" works just as well or better on the phone. By "every" I mean the only one I can think of, which is using Google during Game of Thrones to remind yourself who the gently caress The Blackfish is supposed to be.

I disagree entirely, the second-screen item swapping was part of what made the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time's water temple so much better, for example. It's far faster to equip and unequip items using a touchscreen, which is important in a series with as many item-based puzzles as Legend of Zelda. It was really great having the treasure maps up on the second screen for Wind Waker.

Spellman posted:I think the ease of the Water Temple is being attributed to the touch screen isn't correct, it's that you could assign the boots to a button that was making it easier. Yes, that was probably the single greatest improvement, but the touchscreen inventory management was an additional improvement over that. There were two additional item slot buttons on the touchscreen that were ideally suited for puzzle items like the boots, things that you wouldn't necessarily be mashing on during combat. It's easier to move puzzle items back and forth between inventory slots with a touchscreen.
