I really hope they update quest management. Having played Witcher 3, then backtracking to ME 1 - 3 makes the ME mission tracking seem downright archaic.

No, I don't want to actually read the mission entry, just give me the relevant popup when I'm in the area! :reject:

Talking of space girlfriends, devs confirmed on twitter that Vetra is romanceable... but not by who.

At this point she's developed such a huge fandom that it's going to go nuclear unless she ends up bisexual. I don't know who the more volatile subsection of fans would be if they can't have Vetra: the Reddit straight males or the Tumblr lesbians.

its the straight males, they're far more vitriolic and awful

It'll boggle my mind if it is anything other than 'either gender'. It's one of the few things DA2 did right. It's not like the characters are deep enough for straight/queer/whatever orientation to actually matter.

I think it's more realistic, and gives interesting characters like Dorian and the relatively interesting Kaidan/MShep romance in 3. On the other hand, this is what leaves queer women in Inquisition with a choice between Josie (who is absolutely not bad, if painfully gender-neutral) and Sera.

And yeah, straight guys are always the worst when it comes to thinking they're not being 100% catered to at all times. Tumblr lesbians tend not to find developers' home addresses and send death and rape threats to developers' families.

Bioware's characters aren't exactly realistic. They're cinematic personalities designed to make the player feel good and rarely, if ever, act against the protagonist or demonstrate initiative on their own. Origins might have been the one game where it seemed like Bioware made an actual deal about character sexuality and the greater world, but it's become increasingly strange to see certain relationships gated behind gender as their games have gone on. For example, compare Origins to Inquisition. One of these feels firmly rooted in typically conservative fantasy ideas of sex and gender (just look at what Sten says to a female Warden!) because it is all mired in medieval Europe norms, and one of these feels like it has become more modern in order to broaden representation. The Qunari, for example, feel like they're being recalibrated in every single Dragon Age release.

Even when I go back as far as Baldur's Gate 2, which I think had some of the best realised characters in their creative history, I have real trouble thinking that any of the characters there were having relationships that were all purely straight for any other reason than mid-90s popular/media backlash.

I don't think gender-neutrality in games is good either - men and women don't have the same experiences, particularly when it comes to romance - but I'm yet to see any compelling player romance paths where I sit there and go, ah, yes, I see why this character is utterly straight. I remember plenty of people in the ME2 thread being confused by the fact that Tali runs through about 3/4 of her romance dialogue with female Shepards before suddenly stopping. Bioware recorded all the dialogue for MShep/Kaidan and FShep/Ashley in ME1. It's all just so arbitrary.

For most characters, it feels nothing more than that there's an if statement that cuts in about 3/4 through their "romance path" and it suddenly bars you from continuing if you're not the 'correct' gender and that's about all the consideration made.

I mean, do any of the ME2 romance options make any reference to gender or whatever? Could you just replace MShep with FShep or vice versa and have the same dialogue work perfectly well? By my memory, both Garrus and Tali work perfectly fine under that criteria. So, if that's the case, why not do it? You win easy points, make people happy, and the only thing that probably changes is some checkbox on a wiki summing up a character as straight, gay or bi.

EDIT: Anyway, 'realistic' is kinda the wrong way to put it. I think that giving characters determined sexualities gives them deeper and more interesting character. Bisexual Dorian would erase part of that character's personality. Similarly, the fact that heterosexual/non-interracial relations are still the norm marks The Iron Bull's "I'll gently caress anybody" orientation as interesting.

FWIW this is kind of why the romances in Bioware games have always come off as bizarre and downright skeezy to me at times. You're taking something like sexuality and gamifying it so that there are rulesets for how you can get each character to like you, what dialogue choices to make so that they'll eventually wanna gently caress, the apex of your achievement being when they do actually say let's gently caress, and so on. Most of the romanceable characters rarely fight you back, or challenge your opinions, or refuse to sleep with the PC even if they do something totally opposed to what that character believes in. It's just a weird gamey delivery system for players to privately get their rocks off with alien spacebabes instead of trying to imagine how a romantic relationship might actually function in a responsive way. This is confirmed by posters who are really into Bioware romances here historically being really well-adjusted and totally not at all weirdly obsessive about their space waifus.

I think a large part of it is also because BG2 is where a lot of Bioware's standard character archetypes got started - then refined in KOTOR.

And personally, I think it is a shame when "bisexual" NPCs are just completely gender-neutral and never so much as refer to the PC with gendered pronouns. It's lazy writing, and inaccurate for many if not most bisexual people.

Yeah but then you might have the implication that bisexuals are weird or alien.

Like if Liam and Cora are the only straight LIs, someone is going to read that as "oh, you want to date someone of your gender? You're a loving weirdo so here, gently caress this weirdo," or "you like either gender? You're a weirdy just like this space cricket."
