I work in tech, but I'm mostly technical client-facing. It's really hard to pretend to be empathetic about software and get what I need to get done, so I've looked into moving to Dev or product, but I am now unsure of that decision.

Fwiw, I work for a tech company as a software engineer too. Except my employer is not a bunch of garbage tech bros, so that kind of poo poo would NEVER be tolerated.

I could probably find it if I dug around for a bit but there was a huge list of stats and resources I found about women fighting for their rights working in fields like sanitation and stuff that often get cited in those arguments. I couldn't even imagine the resilience that takes so those women have some deep respect from me

I said certain because the reasons for disparity are different for say, sanitation than they are for ECE. Sanitation is based on the belief historically that women were incapable of the jobs and the amount of sexism/sexual harassment whereas ECE/nursing were traditionally viewed as feminine because children/caring about people=for vagina havers only and men in those fields would have their masculinity questioned. To put it in very plain terms. Education actually is relatively balanced but also not at the same time. More men are teaching subjects like math and science where women are teaching social sciences, English, etc. that's a whole other discussion worthy of its own thread tbqh

Some of these associations are fluid, too. For example, computer programming was originally viewed as a "women's" field (because it grew out of the earlier occupation of "computer" which was considered secretarial and menial): a lot of the early pioneers of programming are women. The hardware was considered the "real work". It was only in the 1980s when people realized that software was a business in its own right that the occupation started to be seen as "male" and high-status and highly paid.

Some choice quotes:

Please note that in this one, the "she" is an HR rep for Uber...

Startups are the worst, Uber is the worst

quote:

When I reported the situation, I was told by both HR and upper management that even though this was clearly sexual harassment and he was propositioning me, it was this man's first offense, and that they wouldn't feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to. Upper management told me that he "was a high performer" (i.e. had stellar performance reviews from his superiors) and they wouldn't feel comfortable punishing him for what was probably just an innocent mistake on his part.

I was then told that I had to make a choice: (i) I could either go and find another team and then never have to interact with this man again, or (ii) I could stay on the team, but I would have to understand that he would most likely give me a poor performance review when review time came around, and there was nothing they could do about that. I remarked that this didn't seem like much of a choice, and that I wanted to stay on the team because I had significant expertise in the exact project that the team was struggling to complete (it was genuinely in the company's best interest to have me on that team), but they told me the same thing again and again. One HR rep even explicitly told me that it wouldn't be retaliation if I received a negative review later because I had been "given an option". I tried to escalate the situation but got nowhere with either HR or with my own management chain (who continued to insist that they had given him a stern-talking to and didn't want to ruin his career over his "first offense").
[...]
Over the next few months, I began to meet more women engineers in the company. As I got to know them, and heard their stories, I was surprised that some of them had stories similar to my own. Some of the women even had stories about reporting the exact same manager I had reported, and had reported inappropriate interactions with him long before I had even joined the company. It became obvious that both HR and management had been lying about this being "his first offense", and it certainly wasn't his last. Within a few months, he was reported once again for inappropriate behavior, and those who reported him were told it was still his "first offense". The situation was escalated as far up the chain as it could be escalated, and still nothing was done.

It's a nebbish doofus thing. Ugly nerds pull faces in photos because they think that if they look deliberately awkward then people won't notice that they're unavoidably awkward.

I remember meeting a female engineer in a very, very heavily male dominated field (even for engineering), and she told me that on her first day, as the first female in the entire company, her boss took her aside and said, "There's no sexism at this company, so don't go playing the 'woman card'."

Just try to peel that loving onion.

And this wasn't the 70s, this was like four years ago.

This is a good mantra for tech companies even outside of increasing diversity. Not every hire needs to be some insane wonderchild. I've seen job postings get taken away from departments because they're taking so long/being so picky about who they hire.

Reading that Uber poo poo is crazy, makes me super glad my company has made it a mandate to increase diversity at all levels. Not that we're perfect, but our engineering org has become more diverse over the last few years and we're finally getting women and other minorities into leadership roles. I'd love to see more diversity at the executive level though...

Dear r/sex, my boyfriend wants to do gay porn in Minneapolis. What should I know going in?

quote:

We're in our late twenties. We live together in a small apartment in the southeastern US. We plan on getting married in a couple years and have an open relationship.

He was looking for jobs online yesterday when he stumbled across an ad for an agency supplying gay porn actors to two production companies in Minneapolis. On a whim, he sent in a photo, and received a very warm response from the agency and a request for more photos (which I'm helping him take later). They offer cash and airfare to actors.

The idea of him doing porn doesn't bother me in the least, but I do have a lot of questions. How do I determine if the agency and the production companies are legit? What are the sexual health precautions taken in the industry? Are these people just scamming my gorgeous boyfriend out of a couple of sexy photos?

Thanks!
Edit: the companies in question are Kenneth Benjamin Media (kb-models.com) and Charged Media.

One time I had a problem where two employees who I like apart from each other were bitching about each other through me and it was really wearing me down. They'd get in bizarre turf wars over things like who calibrates what scales and in the morning I'd have to navigate a stupid web of 'what are arbitrarily my duties today' between two people for whom I was the proxy of their 'enemy'.

I told the plant manager how it was wearing on me and she told them to stop, set my duties down in writing, and told me if it became a problem again to let her know again. It feels really good to have your feelings respected and accounted for at work. Going to and being at work is hard enough I don't know why people compound that with the stupidest bullshit.

My [26M] sister [22F] drinks bleach regularly. She claims it will help with her indigestion.

quote:

Ok. I realize my post sounds really trolly, and some people might mistake it for spam or some kind of joke. But this is real, decide for yourself.

My sister recently got into this habit of drinking low contentration bleach water (I'd say around 10mL per 100mL of water). I've informed her that this is really bad for health, and might cause cancer or some poo poo. But she refused to listen, showing me some websites and claiming that it has some "health benefits" such as curing indigestion, diabetes, detoxing and disinfecting the body and similar wild claims.

I've been getting really worried for her health, both mental and physical. I mean, it's definitely not normal for anyone to just believe this poo poo that they read online. I, for example would have just laughed at the website and dismissed it as a joke. Does anyone on here have any suggestions?

tl;dr: How do I get my sister to stop drinking bleach as a cure-all?
