Looks like it's going to be a heavy Bill Kelliher influence on this album, which is a good thing. That riff to andromida is killer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MctuLdWtwos

Why can't wanky self-absorbed metal bands go lame in a good way? Why don't they do the black metal thing and make obscure ambient music? Explore Scandinavian folk heritage? But when normal metal bands go boring they just play lovely prog rock.

Opeth, Mastodon, Baroness, Gojira, off the top of my head.

Huh, I guess people hate Mastodon now. The latest one they put out in 14 wasn't great but they've always for the most part put out solid albums imo. I even like most of The Hunter. Never seen them live though. I hear that can be either great or the worst concert you've ever seen. Edit: Oh, people hate Gojira now too. New world.

I like all those bands quite a bit, actually. I even like the idea of all of them playing stuff that's closer to rock than metal. It's just that the results when they've actually tried to do it mostly seem kinda lazy and uninteresting. At least Ghost writes good hooks when they rip off bands from the '70's. Brann and Troy actually sound pretty good live from the clips I've seen. Brent sounds like a cat being strangled. Like sounds that nothing on this earth should make. I remember being hyped about their appearance on David Letterman back in '09 to promote Crack the Skye and they played oblivion. God the vox were so bad. I was embarrassed for them. I really think that could have been a huge break for them and Brent just ruined it all.

"gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say now where were we? oh yeah. the important thing was i had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. i didn't have any white onions because of the war. the only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I can only listen to 2-3 Gojira songs in a row before wanting to listen to something else. I think that goes for most anything I listen to these days. The music doesn't hit me like it used to and I'm bummed about it.
