Catching up on the thread but I wanna say I saw speed racer in the theater and it was an intense as hell experience, I was shocked it was so enjoyable. Everything having a candy coated look to it was great.

You guys have me curious now - where can I go on youtube to see the best fighting game players play?
Look up the top 8 evo matches for, say, marvel vs capcom 3, street fighter iv and v, and guilty gear xrd for the last couple years and you'll have plenty to watch. The mvc3 stuff is funny to see because you have lots of cookie cutter builds, then there's a period of waning interest where less textbook teams start showing up, then cookie cutter builds show up again as the popularity returned

PantsBandit posted:

Do long-rear end manga like that actually feel like they're building to some conclusion or is it just arc after arc so the artists have consistent work until the pen drops from their hand due to a sudden brain aneurysm?

Like, I have a friend that still reads One Piece and it seems strange to me to invest yourself in a story that has gone for literal decades and may go for more.
One piece is literally the most enjoyable story I've read, and while the ending may not live up to the buildup(or it could, who knows, Oda's a great storyteller!), the journey has been more than worth it. I can't recommend it enough. SuperEyepatchWolf did a really good video about the series and it's really well done, and he's going to do a more in depth Why You Should Read for it later this year. I love that he can't resist talking about Senor Pink during it, a character who is around for basically a single fight but has better character depth than a lot of main characters in other series.

He also makes note that a lot of series tend to have individual arcs which break up the series, but One Piece has always been about the one single adventure, with mini-adventures along the way, which gives it a hell of a lot stronger continuity than other series. And it's absolutely building towards the ending, though that is likely still 5-10 years away due to the final obstacles standing between them and the One Piece.

Here's SEW's great video on it and where to begin:

Berserk has an endgame in mind but I don't expect it to ever end, kinda like HxH. One Piece may never end but it's still enjoyable so whatever.
Oda has said he has the ending written out and everything so that if anything happens to him, his work can be finished. He also apparently told a kid dying of cancer everything that happens in one piece from here to the end. Oda is a cool dude.

There are a lot of shockingly good manga including in the vein of dragonball. I made a thread that lists a lot of them with summaries and opinions in bss as a sort of outreach program(the adtrw western comic thread didn't survive long sadly), though there's easily hundreds of others I have yet to read that are also great, and I plan on adding to the thread with a bunch of newer series I've picked up. His ability to make subtle but incredibly funny jokes is unparalleled by the others, and he was a drat good video producer too. I keep forgetting the point SEW makes that One Piece is the third best-selling comic in human history, third only to Batman and Superman, and recently ousting Spiderman. And those are franchises, not a single series.

If you want to see some people be utterly, utterly bewildered by One Piece, Giant Bomb's Quick Look of One Piece: Unlimited World RED is just adorable as hell, because it throws them straight into the deep end from word go

Imagine if RE4 had QTEs that popped up in the middle of random gameplay segments with the same frequency and unpredictability as during cutscenes and that failing one meant replaying a 15+ minute stealth action sequence from the beginning and you have an idea of how infuriating Evil Within's booby trap system was.

humble bundle is doing civilization games now. Civ 3 and Civ 4 + DLC for a loving dollar. Civ 5 + DLC for 8 bucks currently and then if you feel like throwing money away you can get beyond earth for 15.

Dollar tier is awesome, 8 dollar tier is pretty good too.

edit: The store also has really good deals on Abzu, Brothers: A tale of two sons, and Marlow Briggs.

from what I've heard, Night in the Woods is around 8 or 9 hours and is a pretty chill slice of life adventure mid20s animals game. I'll probably pick up that and RCR Underground, and wait on Horizon 0 Dawn until after I finish RE7 / get like halfway done with Nioh.

I feel like I was overleveled for mission 2 in Nioh at level 22 or so (I did the side mission beforehand) but it didn't matter, I still got surprised by loving bats like it was Castlevania for the NES and dropped into a gorge at on point. I'm kind of rushing towards Omoyo level 10 so I can eventually get Sloth Magic.
