Barry Bonds comes up one steal short of The Triple Three in 94 to miss going back-to-back with his 95 season, which would have been crazy considering there was a strike.

He averaged .304/40HR/31SB from 1990 to 2001 but that's not as impressive I'm sure.

Always love to discover new Bonds stats:
Triple three
1990 - achieved
1992 - achieved
1993 - 1 SB shy
1994 - 1 SB shy
1995 - .294 avg (missed by 3 hits)
1996 - achieved
1997 - .291 avg (missed by 5 hits)
1998 - 2 SB shy

That is an incredible run. 4 stolen bases and 8 hits shy of seven consecutive years.

This is why "but STEROIDS :arghfist:" is such a terrible anti-Bonds HoF argument. Even if you ascribe every single thing he did post-98 to steroids, by that point he was already HoF-worthy with 3 MVPs and very nearly 100 WAR.

It was never about his records being tainted, it was about him using them in the first place and violating "the character clause." That's the faux outrage sportswriters use.

Because it was a triple 3 year for Braun, too. He finished behind Kemp in bWAR by .4. Braun had a better OPS but Kemp played a more premium defensive position and had more HR, RBI, and SB. It was because the Brewers were finally good.

No, it's about cheating. Like when you get caught cheating in a test it's completely irrelevant how good the rest of your test was. I don't agree with those people but they're argument isn't as ridiculous as you're portraying it.

Well right, but they just said "steroids are cheating" without proving that steroids cause the specific things that he was good at that let him cheat. It would be like accusing someone of cheating on a test because they had a textbook on the desk, but the textbook is for a different subject so it's not actually relevant. You have to prove that steroids make you better at baseball in the specific ways they state they do.

Good loving luck.

The Padres are giving serious consideration going to a four-man piggyback rotation, similar to what the #Rockies tried in 2012. Having four regular 1-4 starters on a pitch limit of 75-80; regularly followed by what would be starters 5-8 filling in the middle innings piggyback role; with the remaining late innings/setup/closer

Christian Friedrich will never escape that goddawful idea

I don't understand this forum's reluctance to believe that steroids have any effect on a baseball players abilities. I understand people being unwilling to make claims as to how much a player might benefit from steroids, because that is impossible to quantify, but to claim that they don't have any benefits at all is insane. There is more to baseball than just socking dingers. Big muscular guys can suck at it and thin dudes can have power, sure. Speed on the basepaths and in the outfield could be improved. Being able to deal with the grind of playing 6+ games a week for 5 months and the fatigue it puts on your body.

Just because there isn't a study saying "steroids will give you a 5% increase on batted ball speed which will increase home runs by 10% and you'll pick up 5% more running speed which will lead to 20% more stolen bases" doesn't mean there isn't any benefits.

cis autodrag posted:

Well yes, actually. There are steroids that can improve your vision. Maybe you can practice more and take more BP if you aren't tired because you recover faster, leading to better hand-eye coordination and swing path.

Balls hit hard are less likely to be converted into outs than balls hit softly. Steroids give players bigger muscles, which means that when they get hits they're hitting the ball harder than they would have without said bigger muscles, which means balls that might have been routine ground/line outs find holes, which is how steroids add to a players BA without giving them a "better eye".

Basically what I'm saying is that it's been firmly established that taking steroids makes you a better hitter.
