I would very much (when I'm not being selfish) like Ellison to win. (I think Buttigieg should set his sights higher. Honestly, Ellison too, but someone's gotta do the job, and it might as well be someone good.) I think he'd be great at the job, and I think it would be a great symbolic victory and a good first step in progressives taking over the coalition. (I don't want to kick centrists out, I want to put them to work, but I sure as hell don't want them in charge any more) I ain't giving up on poo poo if Perez wins, though. Hell, even if that Podesta Group guy who just dropped out somehow wins. Not because those are equally good outcomes (they're so not, though Perez isn't completely awful, i guess), but because gently caress giving up. It's defeatism that makes me upset, not some bizarre attachment to third-wayism or what the gently caress ever, and 'I'm gonna go start my own party, but with blackjack and hookers' is just a slightly shoutier defeatism, and this goddamn thread is full of it.

Perez was in Kansas campaigning for votes from county leaders and was asked about the need for the party to retain the support of the Sanders contingent. Perez unexpectedly blurted out a truth that party functionaries to this day steadfastly bury and deny even in the face of the mountain of evidence proving it. This is what Perez said: And here is why the progressives are going to be pissed as hell if the establishment boxes out Ellison.

Business Gorillas posted:you can look at it that way. you can also look at obama seizing the progressive movement in '08, depressing the gently caress out of them to continue the status quo to the point they quit politics until a literal self-described socialist reinvigorated them. 08 was the same drat thing - the progressive movement accomplished jack poo poo in the years leading up to it, and suddenly mobilized when a charismatic figure started saying things that they thought they agreed with... ...as long as they didn't listen too closely, anyway. the progressive movement had no one to blame but themselves for being suckered by Obama Agean90 posted:my only hope is that after the first rounds dudes who vote for perez get torn a new one by their constituency and flip to supported who ever makes it to round two there's as many rounds as it takes, and no one automatically gets kicked out. once everyone sees where the vote numbers end up after the first round, the backroom dealing really gets started as the leaders start wooing the people who obviously can't win. then the second round happens. if there's still no winner, everyone retreats to the backrooms and starts wheeling and dealing to grab the supporters of the obvious losers and peel supporters off the main leaders. repeat until someone gets enough votes to win. Serf posted:even if the position is nothing more than symbolic, we haven't gotten a single win. even a symbolic win would be something there already was a symbolic win. Schumer made Bernie the head of outreach, a new leadership position created just for him. it doesn't have any more power than the DNC chair does, but if you care more about symbolic wins than actual wins...
