Obama for all his ills probably saved lots and lots of americans from dying of curable diseases with obamacare, his problem was that he genuinely believed his own campaign rhetoric of being above politics and healing the country. So he sought out compromise to forge a new consensus disregarding the fact that the two previous consensus makers: FDR and Reagan more or less did so by crushing the opposition instead of making peace with them.

His legacy was for the people he sought to reach cross the aisle to to usher in a president who is against everything he stands for.

he's a tragic figure in his own way. I suspect history will say that Hillary and the Republicans were correct about him in 2008: too inexperienced to lead. He ran his primary campaign on healing the divide between red and blue, Hillary ran on "turning up the heat on the Republicans". It would have being better for Obama to sit out 2008 and wait for his moment in 2016 or 2020.
