A Bernie person won election to my local Dem party and they're actually doing stuff like running candidates for local offices and holding events for the first time in years. My district has been deep red since before 99%+ of the posters on this website were born.

it really is baffling how the democrats, as a party, still haven't figured out what atwater's quote about how to disguise vile policy with seemingly benign cover stories implies in terms of national dialogue take the voter rights issue, or things like ID cards to vote. it's very difficult to explain to someone that the abstract concept of a person being required to have ID to vote is Not A Good Thing. they see all the things in their lives that DO require an ID, they see it as the most basic of precautions, and they don't see getting an ID as a significant burden. there's also a lot of people who are fine with ID in principle, assuming things like if you could magic wand a secure and effortless distribution of national ID cards one of the democrats' main counterargument is that there are efforts done to make getting an ID difficult - shutting down or understaffing of DMVs, selective ID acceptance to ween out college kids or whatever, that kinda thing, but that's a much more intricate and localized problem. the voter ID poo poo in the carolinas is different than the poo poo in texas is different than, etc. so there's no easy national pushback. the other is that it's racist. and while the RESULT is clearly racially biased, that's more a byproduct of black people overwhelmingly voting democrat; if black people voted 90%+ republican, the republicans would be tripping over their dicks to ensure black people got to the polls (at the likely expense of some other group). and neither of those arguments really do anything. the racism argument falls on deaf ears because it's not purposely racist, and only serves to make the democrats sound disingenuous. the localization of voter ID issues results in it becoming an arcane topic because there's no national level dialogue that can be driven republicans have an advantage because their national message is "states' rights" and they can hew to that as an out for any kind of difficult question. but that's the advantage that needs to be tackled directly and undercut. not this bullshit edging where you KNOW you're right but can't finish because nobody else gives a poo poo the #1 goal of politics is to win. if you're in politics and that isn't your #1 goal, you've already lost and get the gently caress out

Ex Nashville mayor Karl Dean has announced he is going to run for Tennessee governor in 2018 for Haslam's open seat. He was wildly popular in middle Tennessee at the end of his term and Nashville is a successful growing it city. He is very pro-business and fashions himself as a moderate, but I think he would have a shot. Haslam hasn't been very popular and I don't know who the republicans could run that can point to a proven record of successful governance like Dean can.
