If I could and it was convenient by a known Porsche specialist then I'd have it done because you could easily cover the cost of the inspection by knocking the price down with what they find because unless it is literally the perfect car, they'll find minor stuff and if they don't then you're golden anyhow. I had a PPI done on a 99 996 in great condition that found ~4k in recommended work, nothing imminent or unusual and I got $1500 knocked off the price before some other dude swooped in and bought it for like 4k more than what we had negotiated. On the 996TT I ended up with I had a Porsche dealer do the PPI since there wasn't an available specialist in the area and they did a poo poo job and charged twice as much as the specialist but I just needed basic confirmation that the car was decent because the price was so good. If you're concerned about the IMS then buy it at 17.5 and have the IMS/RMS done and you're still under 20k with an even more impressive service history to go with the car. If it's really in that good of shape you could probably throw it on bringatrailer since they have hardons for less common colors and huge service histories plus that suspension option with LSD is excellent. Voted do it without a PPI if you liked it.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I realized I was mistaken and that putting a rear-facing car seat in the 996 is pretty much _not_ feasible. My kid is 18 months away from front facing, meaning I'd have to put him up front in the interim - which I'm not opposed to, but if the car is to be an effective two seater I'd probably get a cheap Cayman instead, or just wait until I find the right 997 and put him up front until I have room in the back.

Yup, time to wait for a front facing seat or a booster because there's no possible way to fit a rear facing seat back there. The hardest part isn't even the seat to seat distance, it's that the rear seats are incredibly narrow to where I tried 3 boosters before I could find one that would sit flat on the seat and even still it's a little too wide to easily clip the seatbelt. A bunch of people use a hot air gun to soften and bend the armrests inward so that they fit better but I haven't bothered too yet since it's a nice weather car and it hasn't been nice weather.

You can buy the keys/fobs themselves through various online sources, but it needs a PST2 or PIWIS to code to the car computer. Dealers will typically do it if you bring a new key to them, but it will still be $rape$ for 10 minutes of work. Shouldn't be anyhwere near $500 though. I think the Calgary dealer did it for the PO of my 996 for $150 or something. Alternatively, if you have local European indy shop they might have a tool and be more open to doing it for a reasonable price. e: Forgot about the cutting itself, yeah, the dealer will still probably need to do that unless you can get lucky with a smith. slidebite fucked around with this message at 21:10 on Mar 2, 2017 |

I actually picked up and installed one of those DSC Sport modules a couple weeks ago, and it has just about transformed the car. Ok Porsche bros, I need some wheel opinions. I have Ruf Speedlines and Victor Lemans black/polished in 18" for 996TT offset (plus OEM twists but ugh) and terrible 16" Cup I's on the 968. I love the Ruf my wife loves the Victors but I hate the Victors (on the 996TT) and she hates the Ruf. So now I'm trying to decide what wheels to get on the 968 since its are garbage and I have a set of 18" tires that don't fit the 996 but fit the 968 which is why I'm aiming at 18" vs the superior (to me) 17" sizing. Option 1: Get 2 Victors sized to fit the 968 so I can use 2 of the 4 I already have for $600. Those 1552's look way better on there than I thought they would. I think I'll just have to go with the Victors because it solves the problem of using the extra tires and it's hard to justify putting 2000 wheels on a 7000 car. Maybe when it's fully restored I'll upgrade to something nicer and in the meantime keep an eye out for some cheap Forgelines or Fikse wheels for the 996TT. edit: I want these even worse than the Rufs. I managed to get some stuff done this week on the 968. There was a mostly disconnected aftermarket alarm that kept blinking the turn signals that I finished disabling and am working on fully detaching all the modules but might give up since everything is 100% factory functional as is, just with a couple extra harnesses left open. Replaced the stereo with a newer working one, pulled the rocker panels and will have the new (correct) clips Tuesday, and got the parking brake working. By Wednesday I'll have: New LR SSK installed with new boot and knob, plus bushings etc. Rockers correctly installed Headlights better aligned New tinted glass sunroof New armrest and OEM plates for empty switches Also new wheels are settled on. They're not exactly what I wanted but a very good set of 993 Targa speedlines for 550 shipped was too good to pass up. I have an old gold gloss plastidip set that I might use to do the inner halves but that's not pressing. The design really lends itself well to two-tones and they're correct era design and size for the 968 so I'm pretty stoked, especially at that price. Just like these with a bit more wear.

It photographs decently but overall it gives me an air of "it's been hosed with". Reminds me of the cars that seemed to be everywhere ten years ago that were haphazardly 'updated' to newer bodywork. The A/C bracket with no compressor on it, for example.

Operation: Restore 968 is going pretty well now. The garbage aftermarket alarm is disabled and new stereo was installed which works very well. A new short shifter and associated bushings are in though there's still a little more slop than I was expecting but the only comparison is the 996TT with a SSK so my opinion is skewed but either way I'll have to look at the intermediate shift lever if it's still annoying. Tomorrow I'll have the clips to fill in empty switches and to correctly attach the rocker panels which were done incorrectly previously. By Thursday I'll have the new shifter boot since the other aftermarket one I had is impossible to install correctly with the SSK kit and MOMO knob plus I'll have the 17" Speedlines that will be getting new tires. Hopefully the weather will hold off enough to enjoy the car this weekend because it's going to be so much better than when I last drove it a couple weeks ago.
