Frankly the French got exactly what they deserved. FFS they built their base effectively at the bottom of a bowl and had no plan for keeping it supplied.

BoB was close but it still was a story mainly about officers and officer glory poo poo

every movie ever is about officer glory poo poo btw

 wut

The two "successful" officers are a guy so straightlaced and shy everyone makes fun of him for being a quaker (but who was a legit badass IRL as depicted), and the other one spends the series descending into rampant alcoholism. Literally every other officer in the show is hilariously incompetent, too green to know poo poo, or too senior to know the names of any of the main characters below the rank of captain.

Wasn't Colonel Sink actually a decent commanding officer during his time with the 506th? I don't ever remember getting the vibe that he was some super lovely officer...

the main character is Winters and the office space guy, both officers

Doesn't mean it portrays them as god or anything just that usually movies focus on officers, it's not that controversial

BoB is decidedly not about officer glory. That's the only thing I'm saying. Winters was the only officer badass, and he was the farthest thing from a glory hound. Office Space guy was an intel dude...there's no glory there, and he spent most of his time looking for scotch.

Sink seemed competent; one of the Lts was a possible war criminal for executing a bunch of POWs, one was PTSDed out of his mind, Tom Hanks' kid was a West Pointer who didn't know poo poo yet, and every other officer was loving moron.

It's good but it's got a very different tone. It took me a while to figure out that I liked it. It's much more about the mental condition of a handful of guys who may/may not be in the same area as each other.

Oh no, it was even worse. He took out some engineers to mark mines at night(!) and when they inevitably got hosed up by said mines, he told the driver where to turn when he was 100% wrong and got them stuck in a swamp.

While trying to casevac the engineers.

I liked that about the Pacific, along with it's tighter focus on fewer people, which made it easier to follow (although they were spread around) and allowed them to be developed further. I also liked the ending; summarized the threat of nuclear war and the impending Cold War. Both are great, they just do different things.

Doing any sort of live-action lane clearance with personnel is beyond stupid if it's not 1944. You loving go around, or you use a tank with a roller or a morningstar. Then in fully broad daylight in a secure situation with ample time you lane clear with personnel on the ground.

the pacific is pretty goddamn great. i even enjoyed the first few episodes even though they were slower and weirdly paced for a war miniseries. theres definitely an obvious tonal shift midway through, but i suspect its due to them trying to stay true to the different source material they were using

I'm inclined to agree, but the Luftwaffe was sending up 400+ aircraft to intercept the B-17s in 1942-43. The Kassel mission was '44, so the strategic bombing campaign should've had a noticeable effect, plus P-51 escorts. But a poo poo-ton of German fighters coming out of the sun isn't necessarily wrong. Depends how they write it.
