A coal miner's wife who was lucky enough to not have to work outside the home (in the mine, or as a servant, or at a textile mill) usually eked out the family income by doing small farming like raising chickens, or took in sewing piecework. In addition to all the exhausting work of hauling water, chopping firewood, cooking meals from scratch, sewing the family clothes, etc. There were no Peg Bundys in coal hollers. The whole thing is a bucket of bullshit.
