I'll give you Capaldi but only on the condition that he trends towards Malcolm Tucker and not The Doctor

But I really like Tennant in this. It's close enough to Young's while giving it some unique character.

So listening to Zootopia's soundtrack for the thirtieth time or so got me wondering - what are people's favorite scores to animated films? Like, we all know the songs, but the backing music for non-singing scenes is a bit more niche.

I know the opening paragraph implies Zootopia is my favorite, but while it's up there (I could gush about it for ages, but if I had to pick only one track I really dig, then I'd highlight the recurring "smuggest loving fox" theme, e.g.: "Jumbo Pop Hustle"), I kinda think my favorite's Aladdin. Alan Menken's music is absolutely in your face for the entire runtime of that film, and definitely was a large part of making that film as memorable as it was. Favorite bits include "On a Dark Night" (the opening), "Marketplace", "To Be Free" or "The Battle".

I suppose it helps that the song melodies were strong enough that Menken could interlace them across the entire film as leitmotifs - "A Whole New World" being the general love theme, "One Jump Ahead (Reprise)" being Aladdin's go-to theme basically... Genie sort of has a leitmotif, though it's not just "Friend Like Me" like you'd expect, but the bit about 40 seconds into "To Be Free". Also doesn't hurt that some of this background music was reused verbatim for the Genesis game that I played hours upon hours of (though mostly for the brief paragraphs of text between stages, not so much in-game), so I already knew some of it.

Runners-up would include two more Menken scores, Beauty and the Beast (that piano!) and Hunchback of Notre Dame (that choir!) and, well, Zootopia (though that one admittedly had to grow on me - which makes me wonder how many of Disney's other soundtracks I'm taking for granted).

Oh, and David Tennant's Scrooge McDuck is incredible. It's how all the kids sound like young adults that bothers me.

Beauty and the Beast will always be my favourite animated film soundtrack, but that's hardly fair, since it was a) the first animated film soundtrack I ever owned or listened to, b) the first soundtrack I ever owned or listened to, and c) the first album I ever owned.

Oh, and for a non-Disney example, "Fairy Tale" is too good a melody for it to be used in goddamn Shrek.

Eh, I think Tennant's voice is just distracting simply because it isn't Alan Young. Anyone would have been jarring after growing up with that voice.

i saw a comment somewhere that the tone seems to be similar to Gravity Falls and...yeah. It basically looks like they merged Ducktales and Gravity Falls together. It's not a bad way of updating the show, but it's most certainly the most obvious route. At least they're keeping the aspect that Scrooge is a badass adventurer.

The original Shrek is a good film (taken into context of its time) and this is a great score, and they fit well together.

There was a GHOST here.
It's gone now.
I was listening to the soundtracks for Hunchback and Prince of Egypt on a loop the other week and part of me is just a little sad that we'll likely not see another animated film so entrenched in the Jewish and Catholic musical stylings. There's a romantic severity to biblical language (including OT here) and the style of the chants that translates so powerfully with music. And I love aggressive music.

But I'm not at all musically-trained, so as much as I'd love to really get into the nit and grit of the scores I lack the faculty to do so. :( All I can say is I'm not Catholic and Catholic music affects me in a big way. It's some wild poo poo.

That is some quality faux-Danny Elfman. It has both the choral singing and the bum-bum-bum-bum tricks of Elfman's scores.

Yes!

The song with Jonsi from Sigur Ros is what attracted me to the movie as I've been a huge fan of that band since forever now. I decided to give the movie a try and completely fell back in love with animation in general. I owe that soundtrack a lot.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

The Lion King had an excellent score - the Wildebeest Stampede always sends chills, and the score's such if you close your eyes, you can picture the scenes, and as mention - Aladdin is just fantastic with setting the mood.

Mulan's got a pretty good one, I particularly like how A Girl Worth Fighting For ends in that it's both quite abrupt and yet there's a kind of trailing off as the army first sees the scorched village, taking the wind out of their sails.

No I get that, it's just that there's very little collectible art that inspires that reaction in me.

Like the only decoration I've put up in my room all through college and grad school is a newspaper ad for a Blue Oyster Cult concert; nothing else has struck my fancy. (Entirely by coincidence, the poster is also of a skeleton. :yohoho: )
