I never really thought that much about putting a lot of time and effort into supporting a movie, but now that I look at the shelf of Zootopia toys on a shelf next to my TV, and the Zootopia poster staring me in the face from across the room and these all add up to two unmistakeable conclusions: 1. These are both the signs of someone who is probably never getting laid again, or at the very least should never bring a date home. 2. Somehow I put some effort into collecting these inconsequential items and I have surprised myself.

Yo, animation thread, if you were up at 2:15 a.m. eastern like I was last night and watching Turner Classic Movies, you got treated to a seriously dope double feature: Belladonna of Sadness and Fantastic Planet. I was not expecting both of them to be such masterpieces of the anticlimax, but they both certainly lived up to their aesthetic notoriety. Plus, they were both released in 1973! https://vimeo.com/181140870 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwrip4d1JFc They immediately spurred me to consider the two other great '73 animated films I've seen. (Nah, except for the opening credits, Disney's Robin Hood ain't one of 'em, nor are the two Charlie Brown specials from that year.) Obvi, Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Traffic is one of 'em: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj59CU8suAk The other was the Pick-recommended Maugli, which is technically a feature compilation of shorts made between '67 and '71: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIOo6oKdLCQ I just realized that Charlotte's Web was also '73. I doubt a re-watch of it will be as endearing as I found it as a child, but the showtunes are basically cooked into my brain, so might as well post my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bTSs3hTNRE

Magic Hate Ball posted:I feel compelled to share a favorite of mine from two years later: Huh. I always thought this was a Cordell Barker short, since it's pretty similar to his style. (he's the guy who did The Cat Came Back) By the by, the NFB has almost all their animation streaming online if you're looking for more animated shorts. Start with Barker's Strange Invaders and get lost in animation for a couple hours.

Saw this on NHK News today -- The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo set up a website dedicated to showcase early Japanese animation. I can't read Japanese but the newscast said an English version was slated for release next month. In the meantime, maybe someone can find something really neat here: http://animation.filmarchives.jp/index.html It doesn't really work when you run it through Google Translate, but if you do run it through GT you can figure out most of how the site works and then go back and fumble around. some kinda jackal fucked around with this message at 00:39 on Mar 6, 2017 |

The Dreamworks film Larrikins has been cancelled apparently? http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwmusic/article/MATILDA-and-GROUNDHOG-DAYs-Tim-Minchin-Comes-to-Feinsteins54-Below-One-Night-Only-20170305 Although I can't find much other news about that yet. I'm conflicted because I like Tim Minchin and the world (and my soul) needs more talking animal movies... but I also was dreading all the true blue Aussie stereotypes that film would have been laden with. Nah I'm not really that conflicted. It's poo poo news :/

Finally got to see Sing. I was worried before I went to see it. I knew it would either be really good or really mediocre. I had a feeling it was gonna be good, though. And it was. Holy poo poo. Seriously an excellent movie. Great composition, fun music and really top notch animation. It tended to get a little saccharine at points but nothing that really detracted from my enjoyment of the film. Every scene is packed with loving detail and quality cinematography.

Hedrigall posted:Haha cool joke post! Keep up the excellent deadpan humour Why you gotta hate? I know on the surface it seems like a superficial jukebox musical like Trolls turned out to be, but there are a lot of genuine moments in the movie that give it more depth than the average musical cartoon. E: okay I can see how my comment that the animation was "top notch" was an overstatement. Sing did nothing to push the boundaries of the medium the way Studio Ghibli or Disney might, but nonetheless the animators were able to convey a great deal of personality and emotion into each of the characters and create a result that was greater than the sum of its parts. Pick posted:*grits teeth* Trolls was a good movie. I thought it was good but not great. Art and animation were really good, and I liked the "Get Back Up Again" song enough to watch that part more than once, but I found the rest of it pretty forgettable. Sing had more emotion and was better overall, IMO.
