Here's some dubious advanced statting for generating some trade-deadline analysis debate: How much did each playoff team improve after the deadline?

Interesting about Clendening. I haven't watched him closely but I've been hearing about how AV is nuts for not letting him play more because his possession stats are so good, but you've just described some of the downside with those metrics. It's why I always look at things like zone time and quality of competition; some guys shouldn't be playing more than 3rd-pairing sheltered minutes and I suppose he's one of them.

On the other hand, Brady Skjei has been getting better and better all season and boy does he look awesome right now. Rangers fans are lucky to have him.

I mean they'll then tell you that zone starts and QoC isn't important in these situations because *reasons* but yeah

thing is often when guys like Staal or Girardi are out there they aren't usually giving up high quality chances against because they committed really bad errors or turnovers (usually). But they give up the puck so much in other ways that their possession stats are bad and they are bad. Clendenning drives shots well I think and he is pretty good in the offensive zone and following the play, but when he fucks up oh boy he fucks up and he does it often enough that it's noticeable.

That said, I'm still kinda "eh" about evaluating the whole situation. Yeah you don't want him out there having to defend against really good players. Maybe he can move the puck out if he gets it but in the meantime he's going to be bad and his outlet pass might be a terrible turnover. I think with hard minutes you'd see his fancy stats crater, but who knows maybe I'm still blinded by the bad turnovers and defense without the puck

Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed one goal in his last three games, and that goal was an OT GWG in Montreal. 3 shutouts in the last 6 for the CBJ if you account for Korpisalo vs. NYI.

Oliver Bjorkstrand also likes scoring goals against New Jersey.

I'm just looking at the overall picture, much as I did with the Horton for Clarkson trade: neither choice (broken Horton or maybe-can-play-but-at-least-is-insured Clarkson, Prout who sucks or Quincey who also is Not Very Good) is particularly thrilling. Quincey has been neither good nor bad so far; he took a penalty causing a very brief 5-on-3 tonight, but it's in the net if he doesn't trip Palmieri.

At best, Quincey's a serviceable bottom pair defenseman or maybe a useful #7. Worst case scenario, he indeed sucks and goes up to occupy Prout's seat in the press box while Nutivaara goes back onto the bottom pair, he isn't re-signed, and it frees up $1.575M in cap space which probably shouldn't have been alloted to Prout in the first place which, in turn, can be used for something nice.

Or is that flawed logic from the weird Columbus bubble you try to pop at every opportunity with the focus of an angry five year old?

I kind of wonder if a team like Edmonton or Toronto would offer him more because of intangibles or something - a guy who's won Cups, Olympic gold, played extensively with Crosby (and Malkin, hell, with Selanne and Niedermeyer too), Knows What it Takes to Win...I can see Lamoriello or Chiarelli thinking he'd be a good influence to have around McDavid or Matthews.

Don't think his bonafides as an offenseman were ever really in question. He wasn't up to the absurdly difficult task of being a #1 on a bad team, but there was always a lot of skill there.

Kunitz's TOI is noticeably down this year, I think even the coaching staff recognizes they've got to play some of the younger guys instead.

Danglers impede vision. Hockeymans are tough you know.

I had a dangler explode once off a slapper in a pickup game. Playing the rest of that game was scary.

Thing is, Schultz's minutes have steadily gone up over the year due to injuries etc and he's still thriving. He owns.

As far as Kunitz goes I'm not so sure you're right because the past month plus they've had him on Crosby's line at even strength and predictably that line has been rear end. They finally demoted him mid game today for Guentzel and Crosby ended up with like 9 shots on goal. Jake-Sid-Sheary should be a thing, or Sheary-Sid-Hornqvist. Kunitz is fine on the fourth line but for some reason he inevitably worms his way back into the top six.

Aside from times where injuries have left holes in the lineup, Kunitz has generally been off of Crosby's line and off the first power play, at least. Conor Sheary has mercifully put an end to Kunitz with Crosby for the most part.

Also free Hornqvist. I miss him on the top line even if Sheary and Guentzel are probably legitimately the most talented wingers Sid's ever had outside of Team Canada. I have no idea why Hornqvist is on the third line except to try and balance out Bonino's horrible fancystats with Hornqvist's awesome ones.

Kunitz worms his way back because he's still a guy who can score ~35 EV points, and Pittsburgh's ice time distribution means guys who can produce at that rate will spend time with one of Crosby or Malkin. Kunitz has actually spent significantly more time with Malkin than with Crosby this year.

I'd like to see Guentzel get a legitimate shot there with Sheary on the other side because that has looked good, and Guentzel has shown the ability to produce offense. I'm not sure I like Kessel on the third line any more either. Him and Malkin keep scoring together and yet they're constantly held apart. Sullivan is obsessed with having three strong lines but what worked last year hasn't worked so far this year since HBK has been a bad combo.
