I know the thread has mixed opinions of anime, but I think we can all agree that documentarians should stick to showing the argument, not proselytizing their own opinion. BBC Three's Stacey Dooley thinks popular anime Girls Und Panzer, and similar titles, should be banned. http://www.otakutale.com/2017/bbc-interviews-girls-und-panzers-character-designer-fiction-like-this-should-be-banned/ Since it's a fairly niche title even by anime standards, ourside of Japan, i feel compelled to mention that there is no "fan service" in the main series, and the closest it comes in the side episodes is a trip to the beach from the main protagonists.

A BBC test team accidentally included a single frame of loli in an employee induction video in the 70s, turning half the staff instantly into nonces. Also maybe this should start going in the OP to piss off Stacey Dooley, among other relevant reasons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4H70U26HxM

quote:She ignored me when I said… “Don’t look at us to turn away from your problem within the UK”…. During the interview, we touched upon ways that we can tackle the child abuse issues in Commonwealth world. She said “banning all fictions like this!”. I suggested “Well, solve poverty first. Legalizing fictions that has no victims will lower the crime rate”. She seemed like she didn’t get the idea. I think the article is incorrectly interpreting 'fictions like this' to refer to girls und panzer, when she's referring to child rape manga etc. https://twitter.com/StaceyDooley/status/837959568382644224

I mean trying to "ban" that seems about as practical as banning piracy. Which is to say, not. If you're going to attempt to restrict access to it you'd need to go after the content hosts which would require international co-operation and probably won't be particularly affected either way by going after the end user. Lord of the Llamas posted:I don't think I can side with a guy who thinks we shouldn't tackle child abuse because poverty still exists. I'd agree, because one would actually reduce child abuse. I'm not sure why he was paraphrased as "the UK should solve the issue of poverty before tackling child abuse" when in his actual quote he says "Well, solve poverty first. Legalizing fictions that has no victims will lower the crime rate." (I have no idea whether weird Japanese fanservice or whatever lowers the rate of child abuse, but poverty definitely increases it.)

Fangz posted:Well, no ban can be absolute, but I think it's good that you can't sell anime child porn in high street shops in the UK. I would concur, but that again is an issue of attacking supply, which is more sensible than digital content bans which tend to be directed at the end user and utterly impotent outside of national jurisdiction. It's essentially running up against problems like drug bans and piracy bans and anything else that is incapable of actually attacking the supply of contraband. I think rather than trying to bang your head against that method with even more things an alternative approach might be advisable. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 18:53 on Mar 6, 2017 |

I think there's evidence to suggest that anime child porn (lolicon) has been used by paedophiles to groom actual children, and that kind of material is illegal here in the UK which is good

I'm also reasonably confident that there's a lot more social stigma involved in reporting rape in Japan, which is probably part of the reason rape stats are lower
