I remember there was a time in my youth Channel4 or maybe the Sci-fi channel showed anime late at night. Sometimes it would be decent, occasionally they'd put on hardcore, tentacle action. There wasn't much rhyme or reason to it so maybe they were ordering and screening it sight unseen...

Speaking of illicit substances I might just commit a fairly heinous crime at the moment if I could have access to something that actually helped with this drat cough. Currently I'm just drinking lots of microwaved sprite and honey. gently caress all else seems to work.

The active ingredient in there for your cough is phenylephrine, which has never really been shown to be active orally, but they pulled all the ephedrine-containing cold medicines because a couple of are boyes OD'd for a training course trying to increase their stamina and lung capacity despite the huge black box saying never do that. I prefer just lemon. efb

Just go to a Boots and grab some of those chesty cough syrups that coat your throat or something, and some throat numbing lozenges. Do the lozenge first, then the syrup. I'm not a doctor though, it just works for me.

You can get ibuprofen for 50p at the supermarket ffs. If you feel manly double that up with 1 paracetamol and a flu thing which has phenylephrine in it for a triple whammy and you can work your manly way though any cold/flu related ailment. Until of course you find that you have been dosing yourself oblivious to a potentially fatal infection because it was to difficult to get to the doctors because of work pressure or unavailable appointments.

The only cough syrups worth a crap are basically liquid codeine. They actually suppress the cough reflex, unlike other stuff which is just sugar syrup that soothes a tickly throat for about two minutes. You can still buy codeine linctus without a prescription in the UK, it's just a 'pharmacist only' product that you have to either ask for or buy online after answering a few questions. It's worth it, just take it with some laxatives or you'll never poop again. EDIT: And phenylephrine is worthless and has no evidence behind it whatsoever. Or J Collis Browne's Mixture, which is the same thing but morphine. And peppermint. Some Boots' still carry it. Both are preferred for dry coughs than productive ones though.

That you can get codeine or even morphine over the counter at a pharmacy provided you present with a convincingly awful cough is a compelling reason to carry on smoking imo.

Do doctors just dose themselves up to the eyeballs on whatever? I don't know how they avoid being sick constantly with hours and all the sick people they encounter.

It varies, but when you're familiar with medications and how they work you do get more comfortable with taking them. Plenty of normal people don't like taking the full dose of paracetamol, let alone mixing half a dozen pills for various cold symptoms, but most doctors probably wouldn't think anything of it. You do get sick quite often though, but at least over here we can still take time off. I've spoken to docs in America that have worked shifts with an IV in their arm because they're puking/making GBS threads every half hour, or with a high fever, or wearing a mask to try and avoid spreading the flu. We aren't quite there yet, the most I will go to work with is a cold/occasional migraine. The PM has rejected William Hague's snap election idea. A snap election "would catch the Labour Party in its worst condition since the early 30s, and with its least credible leader ever". "There is no doubt that they (the prime minister and cabinet) would be in a stronger position to take the country through these challenges successfully if they had a large and decisive majority in the Commons and a new full term ahead of them," he said.
