Uh, chemical weapons were totally prevalent in WW1 and afterward is when much of world realized how hosed up they were and banned them. Hague 1907 was largely ignored and violated freely, and it was rather specific to asphyxiation anyway. Geneva is the one that made it stick.

They didn't really cause a lot of death or casualties, but holy gently caress did we silly apes get creative, like an agent that was light enough to get through the gas masks in current use to induce vomiting and force the victim to remove their mask and breathe a second chemical that would potentially kill or incapacitate them.

Really I should be surprised Tanya hasn't brought it up musingly.

I poked through ep. 6 again and at least the mages on both sides seem to be rolling with semi-autos.

Gear shown seems to be taking an "inspired by actual events" angle, even if modifications have been made and it's not entirely accurate to our timeline. The Entente mages appear to be using the period-appropriate French RSC Model 1917/1918 semi-automatic rifle, or something related to it.

Interestingly, Tanya's fellow mages actually seem to be using some variant of the Mondragón M1908. What's Germany doing with a Mexican rifle? Well, while it was designed by a Mexican, it was manufactured by the Swiss by SIG. Mexico canceled their order after receiving ~1,000 rifles, and Germany bought the remaining ~3,000 undelivered rifles in 1914. In reality they were never able to convert the rifles to the 8mm Mauser cartridge as intended, and the action wasn't really suited to life in the trenches (a trait shared by the RSC M1918 as well), but this was less of an issue in the German airship corps where it saw some limited use before machine guns became more prevalent.

Hah, I just thought they were really bad at drawing Mausers.

We really should see a SIG 1903 at some point then, or my 'no John Browning' idea still works.

Meanwhile Sioux's SMG wasn't designed til 1930.

Hey, my first guess was a heavily modified version of the Mauser G41, so you're not alone there.

There are definitely some anachronisms and other oddities here and there, like the SMG. The bombers in episode 6 might be another one, but my knowledge of pre-WW2 military aircraft is somewhat limited. They look kind of like a Russian Tupolev TB-1 crossed with a French DB-20, but it's much harder to find good pictures of planes that old than it is to find information on guns of the time period.

It's called out as being "the latest model", so we can infer that dude's daughter just bought him a very expensive gift. That's not to say that Being X had no hand in the process, of course.

Communism will help more white people than anyone else. Any equal measures unfairly provide less to minority populations just because there's less of them. Democracy is truly the tyranny of the mob.

The existence of mages probably warps military advancement a lot. Why have a 200lb gun that shoots a lot when you can have a guy who can make bullets explode? So rifles are much more advanced for their time frame because putting a better rifle in the hands of a mage pays off so much more than nearly anything else.

Mages are mainly very limited number so regular troop combat still has its uses. Mages are mostly used as scouts, artillery spotters and shooting ground troops if theres no air support. They are basically attack helicopters since the magic also allows them to be very armored to regular gunfire. Airplanes pretty much kill mages so they tend to run if they come around. Tanyas magic device and the rest of her units is pretty revolutionary in that sense it allows them to fly high enough to shoot down the airplanes as well. Previous models couldnt fly high enough to fight back against the airplanes.

Sure. But it's one possible reason for why rifle tech would wax while machine guns would wane. One mage in a pill box could probably do about as much as a maxim or gattling.
I'd be curious if it's the first war with airborne mages.

It might be the first real war with airborne anything.

As for MG development, there are a bunch of reasons why I think they might become even more important, especially over time. For one, give the mage a machine gun and see what happens. We're just starting to see what that looks like with Tanya.

In the manga adaptation Tanya is totally dual wielding a service rifle and machine gun on the Rhine front. At the least we do have mages with SMGs.

Really using mages as flight units regardless of armament seems way less useful than having them on infiltration and sabotage, especially with illusion magic having been shown to exist, but that wouldn't let the show be about magic sky fights over WW1 battlefields.

In the LN Tanyas higher ups did early on ponder if she was in the secret service doing raids behind enemy lines, to explain her unusual competence for her age. Of course she wasnt but they were too proud to ask the secret service if that was the case.

An elite Rangers/SAS/SPARTAN-II's unit could probably be extremely useful as well. The question is if they have enough Mages.

Tanya's requirements to join her force are probably unreasonably high but probably not by much in comparison to real world special operations forces. Just having magical talent isn't enough to also be a gritty tough as nails specialist soldier.

Iretep

Lack of mages is a pretty big reason they dont have many big units yeah. The lack of mages is so bad that youll get forcibly conscripted at the age of 18 no matter what if youre a mage. Even gender wont matter, which is why Tanya joined at such a young age. She wanted to get a good position as soon as possible before WW1 started. Shed be sure as dead if she gets forcibly conscripted at 18 and the world war was still going. Mages being used poorly is also because its a pretty new thing.
Tanya put her unit through every modern special forces training she could think off. Im dissapointed the anime didnt show her torturing them for her anti-torture training.

The irony being she did it to get them to quit only for it to backfire and make them worship and fear her as a malevolent god more than the enemy.

Considering the industry I'm shocked they didn't include this.

I'm actually really glad she doesn't appear to be wearing the overcoat in the show that manages to keep a consistent Prussian/WWI aesthetic instead of being vaguely WWII SS-esque.

Sadly certain people have latched on her visa joke and videos of that are annoyingly appearing on my feed.

I think at that point she had given up on getting them to quit and more just make the worst of them quit. Originally she just wanted to stall with stupidity test, but her higher up told her to get on with it so she changed her aim to just get the super elite. Since she is forced to make the unit, she wants the very best of the best. If you cant get through every special forces training she can think off, you arent good enough to be her meat shield.

Could be the Not-German gun is the Selbstlader 1906 with an extended mag.

They weren't used much in WWI (jam prone, dirt sensitive, expensive, complex) outside of aircraft roles briefly in the war I believe.

The Not-Brits will probably have something like the Farquhar-Hill which is arguably most badass of WWI era semiautos:

Köln is too far to the rear for it to make sense as a nest of partisans.

Based on the maps I vaguely recall seeing, the city in question is actually likely either Reims which seems somewhat far forward, Arlon in the Netherlands, or Luxembourg City.

I'm slightly annoyed at the V-1's appearing this early when the first manned flight of the Heinkel He 178 wasn't until 1939. 1925 just seems way too early.

I say this mainly as someone who finds it interesting to speculate on the differences scientific development when applied to armaments might take in a world with practical magic and it kinda renders such a game more difficult with more egregious divergences; when everything else seems like it followed plausible paths this seems quite severe.

It sure as heck ain't a V1, just a generic rocket given that name, and it's nothing like the 178 as it has no manoeuvrability. I'm annoyed it's taken the V1 name and misrepresented it.
