Rigel posted:We're never going to know for sure, but the UFC (and therefore the fighters) got rooked on the Reebok deal because the UFC apparently did not know what the fighters were getting on sponsorship deals. The UFC was going off of anecdotal stories of lower-tier guys struggling to find sponsors and then not getting paid by sponsors, making low-4 figures on the sponsors, etc. The UFC figured "we can do better than that", and proudly presented the new signed long-term sponsorship deal to the fighters. Nah, they knew it would be costing the fighters money they just didn't care because it was for their own plans/benefit. The UFC absolutely did not go off anecdotes from low tier fighters to make the deal.

DC has specifically said that he loves Popeye's over and over, to the point that it seemed like he was trying to get a sponsorship/commercial deal. Ronda too for that matter.

The UFC called out the fighters for lying, thinking there was no way they were making what they claimed, and the UFC was publicly embarrassed when they were proven wrong. If they knew and didn't care, they would not have said poo poo. The UFC negotiated the Reebok deal without knowing what the top fighters were making.

That essentially proves the UFC had no clue what the fighters were making. If the UFC is pocketing most of the money, then that only supports my point even more because they got FAR less than they could have. The UFC would not have knowingly screwed themselves while negotiating with reebok.

Before UFC was getting zero money now they're getting a bunch of money and have more control over how their product looks, the weren't going to get reebok to pay seventeen beeeeelion dollars to cover the amount of every 3rd tier energy drink on Zeeke "The Assassin" Wilsons banner.

watching the yair / bj fight it was surprising how big yair was in comparison to bj, and bj used to be the ww champ. the times are changing. and it will probably look like the frankie / oliveira fight - competitive and high level but the unanimous decision will be clear for all to see.

The UFC didn't ask the fighters what they were making on sponsorships. Given that, there's no reason for the UFC to know what they were getting, because the fighters and/or their agents negotiated their own sponsorship deals pre-Reebok. Its really not in doubt now that the UFC's exclusive deal was far below what they could have gotten, given what we know now on what fighters were able to get. The only argument against this is, "The UFC is big and successful, they couldn't possibly be this stupid, right?!" No, the UFC really was that stupid, they let themselves get lowballed by Reebok. They thought the fighters weren't getting much, and didn't bother to check first because they were focused on cleaning up the uniform. Rigel fucked around with this message at 22:59 on Mar 9, 2017 |
