In terms of the American political landscape, you really don't. However, you also have to consider two things:

A: Not doing the big thing you said you would do paints a huge target on your back.

B: Voting with the Democrats on anything is treason to the Republican base, which leads to the cries of RINO, which leads to being primaried.

If the AHCA fails, Republicans are going to lose their minds even more.
