Tallgeese posted:Funny thing about this... "American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump." Article goes on to say the FBI, CIA, NSA, and others are involved. Those are the words of the article. So wiretapping was reported by the news. The only funny thing about this is that Trump comes out a month after that article is published and acts like he has some hot new info.

Does the article mention Trump being wiretapped at all? It was my understanding that it is the Russians who were the target.

SBJ posted:Quote: "I dont like christianity" Fuckin' A. Seriously, I'll be honest: Every time I hear this bending-over-backwards religion of peace stuff I just shake my head at how stupid all this has gotten. Because all of these religions are responsible for mostly heinous poo poo anymore. Basically Abrahamic religions are cluster fucks of violence and insanity sprinkled with some nice wisdom and the only real difference to that is how watered-down any given culture is to that stuff. If people stopped listening to the "God is love," peaceful preachers in the West and started reading and acting on their bible, they'd be loving savages.. or Westboro people so probably the same thing. Anyone who tells me Christanity is of peace clearly has never read the bible without a helpful preacher to guide them around the nasty parts. You know, stuff like slaughtering villages and magic bears murdering children for calling a guy bald. Also you know what? I'll go one step further and say gently caress off to Israel too, as a nation. I loathe how any negativity to Israel or Judaism is so insanely tied to being "anti-Jewish." Nothing could be further from the drat truth. I don't support Israel because of the nation's bullshit, because like other places in the world, their leaders are corrupt as hell. To be honest I think at this point they only still exist to destabilize the middle east and keep them off our doorstep, so we fund them with ridiculous military hardware. I have major respect for any Israeli citizen who refuses to do their stint in the army, given the way they use their army. I'd probably take the jail time too, on principle. Overall I don't even have a problem with Israel existing and us supporting them in that endeavor, but despite the spin, it's pretty loving clear that the Middle East doesn't hate them purely for religious reasons.. stealing a bunch of land and then turning it into a ghetto makes them total dicks. The fact that Israel, the nation that was founded BECAUSE of systematic racism, that was forced into ghettos under a boot heel became everything they hated is one hell of an irony. The fact all the old people lose their poo poo if the US doesn't 110% support Israel as a nation because they all believe in stupid prophecies is maddening as gently caress as are people who think the government of a state that's basically all about institutionalized war crimes is tied in any way to an ethnic group. Though I think some of that is the new syndrome of people being offended on other people's behalf, because most American Jews I've met think Israel is as much bullshit as I do. A nation is not a race, and neither is a religion.

Without US support Israel would be in a much more difficult situation

People are exactly the same regardless of what dumb societal constructs they've built around themselves, or what irrelevant rock they happened to be born near. The whole identity politics thing is merely a club with which to attack opponents with. The tenets and beliefs are cast aside or ignored the second they are no longer useful for that cause. Religion and superstition is a weird side effect of our barely functional, jury rigged biology and is always cast aside or embraced as practicality and convenience demands.

Superstition is personal. Religion is social, and often used as a force for shaping societies and politics, for good or bad. Really not the same stuff

The really sad thing with religions is that you have super cool stuff in all of them which is usually linked to a mysticism tradition, and then you have the always more tainted, fundamentalist/political aspect of it, which seem to aim for the complete opposite goal and sometimes even destroy any trace of the mystic tradition. I think it's not very controversial to claim that Islamic, Jewish and Christian mysticism is great and that Islamic, Jewish and Christian fundamentalism is a pile of foul smelling stool

also i think, the size of the middle east is important here. it's a pretty small place, actually. here in america, if i live in a crappy neighborhood or want to sell my house and move, i just do it. it's a pain in the rear end, but our individualistic society makes it easy to do, and land is relatively unimportant. and there's one big giant hegemon called the U.S. federal government that makes those kinds of transactions and the freedom of movement over vast distances possible. and culturally, things are pretty homogeneous. you can drive across the whole territory without having to stop at any border checkpoints -- and stay in the exact same hotel chain the whole way. now the width of the gaza strip is like 4 miles across. a fit person can walk across that length in about an hour. erbil, the capital of iraqi-kurdistan, is as far away from mosul as a commuter suburb is to downtown dallas. and these cities are very different culturally, linguistically, religiously. and your house is not just a thing [or an "asset"] but your family history, a symbol of the future salvation of your people -- and whatever else. different mindset.
