If you want a good strong glow from the impulse, though, you can't really go past the Breen Arc impulse engine reward  Or the Sol Defense mission reward for an orange version. Pedal to the Metal is the best of the spec traits assuming you're running beams and can effectively fly with the throttle maxed at all times. i tend to cut it these days but YMMV depending on what other traits you have access to. The intel one is also decent if you don't have enough other good traits.

Probably want a flupiter then. It's too heavy for a good use of DBB build, so go standard AP beam. Load up with grav well 3 and 1 to keep your enemies pinned, and get to earning the fleet marks for 2x elite frigates. Use the advanced frigates until then. Rest of your gear is pretty standard. Save your EC for the ship trait 'Scramble Fighters', too. It turns your launch fighter command into a group heal and attack buff, essentially making your frigates immortal murderbeasts. Very expensive right now, it's not in the infinity box because I think it's a R&D promo trait? Anyway watch the price on that on the exchange and if you can find an affordable version snap it up, it really makes carriers and frigates shine.
