Someone will have a meeting with trump right before the budget passes where they get him to agree to raising the debt ceiling because he is dumb and easily convinced. Count it.

The Republicans are dumb but most of them are not suicidal. The debate will probably happen around the president since budget nonsense is boring and he'll sign off on whatever abhorrent consensus nonsense gets put on his desk.

youd have to get down to orrin fuckin hatch, prez pro tem of the senate, in the succession before you have a potus who is likely to be pragmatic about the ceiling youd need a whirlwind of impeachments in the next month before you could feel somewhat ok

at some point in all this maybe you get a scotus case desperately trying to declare the debt limit illegal on any basis they can think of, eg if you pass a budget for something you implicitly have authorized the debt to fund it

I remember when Trump toyed around with a partial default on our debt, like our country should be run like some kind of casino. And everyone on Wall St was like, yup this guy clearly knows what he's doing, and voted for him. Good times.

The US's sovereign debt is mostly owned by Americans. Pension funds and Social Security, to name a few. You want to tell the SSA that they can get pennies on the dollar for everything in the trust fund? Well, I mean, Trump probably does, and Ryan would propose some sliding scale where everyone over 66 is unaffected and everyone under 66 has to contribute a kidney to make up the difference, but most American investors don't want their rock-solid assets to suddenly lose half their value or whatever.
