It's all relative. Compared to where I grew up (Boston), Seattle has twice as much property crime but half as much violent crime. And compared to, say, Washington DC or Baltimore, Boston hardly has any bad areas either.

If you want to help, I can get you in contact with the people doing that work. That is how the organization operates. Most people in the organization have a full time job outside of Socialist Alternative, and we pay dues to have as many full timers as we can.

So much this. I grew up in Memphis TN and I'm always shocked when people are like "oh i'm terrified of waiting for a bus on Aurora/in Burien/Beacon Hill/ etc." I got fuckin mugged with a knife when I was 6 for my monthly lunch card money by teenagers in Memphis at my elementary school bus stop. "Oh someone stole my cellphone i'm terrified" "look at all this graffiti it is so terrible" Oh Please. I rolled my eye so hard when my car got broken into once and my in laws acted like I had been personally assaulted. Its just a car.

He was clearly staring at a little kid while masturbating. In 12 years of living in Seattle that is probably the worst thing i've seen. The bus driver literally took off running to catch him and looked like if he got him, the bus driver would have beaten the poo poo out of him. Well the girl getting hit by a box truck on her bike in front of my office was also horrible but that's a different kind of thing.

Yeah, we have been kind of busy since the election. As I said, we are mostly volunteers and it can be hard to find time to meet with everyone when we have full time jobs. We are also a fairly small organization. We reach out as best we can to people in places like Everett and Tacoma, but setting up new branches is a ton of work. I can reach out on Twitter to that person, but there are going to be limits in what we can do. Keep in mind that we are looking for members that will be able to participate in organized events and such.

We want people to understand that we aren't just looking to influence the Democrats, and we don't support capitalism in any form. I don't think we are doing major purity tests though. Part of the bigger issue is getting people that will be active. We aren't looking for members that just pay a yearly membership fee and voting for someone we support. anthonypants posted:In Portland I sat in a couple meetings and had a one-on-one with one of the members and then I started paying dues. Keep in mind that we don't really run many candidates. Our goal isn't just to run our own set of candidates, but to organize people to get them involved in different actions. For example, we didn't stack city hall with our own candidates to divest from Wells Fargo. We helped get a bunch of different orgs into city hall and pressure council into action.

I mean I get out, I visit family, I travel out of state.. But I haven't been able to afford a road trip in ages. My last one was like 7+ years ago when my granfather passed away and I went to Nebraska. I wish that I had more opportunities to visit other states more often but seriously, when my rent is going up by 17% a year it's all I can do to afford to rent a home without a roommate.

Whats the difference between all these commie groups? DSA? SA? I know there were at least another 2 mentioned in the thread. I know leftists splintering into a meaningless infighting factions is a stereotype, but really if you aren't going to be democrats why not just have 1 organization?

anthonypants posted:The DSA is an organization whose intent is to reform the Democrat party, and is not a political party. SA is a political party. What you say about the DSA is the historical strategy under Michael Harrington and has remained true until recently, but it seems that the DSA has been rebuilding itself and distancing itself from the Democratic party. What they are now and what they are becoming seems to be a little unclear, but there is an increasingly strong leftist caucus within the DSA that is trying to push it towards more radical politics. That being said, the DSA is indeed not a political party, whereas SA is. The International Socialist Organization is a revolutionary socialist organization that centers itself around grassroots activism and political education to try to help lay the groundwork for the emergence of a revolutionary political party that could actually smash the state apparatus. It has no pretension of being that party, however, and we consider this a long-term project. The ISO isn't very interested in electoral politics (which SA and even the current DSA definitely are) as much as it is union organizing (we're the main force behind the reform caucus of the teacher's union in Seattle, for instance) and street-level protest (we're also some of the main organizers behind Seattle Clinic Defense for instance) and political education (check out the publishing house we're attached to, Haymarket Books! also we have many recordings of radical thinkers here!) As to why we have different organizations, it's because our politics are different, our priorities are different, and we organize differently. That being said, socialist organizations can and historically have worked together on issues they share in common to good effect. Mr. Lobe fucked around with this message at 09:01 on Mar 14, 2017 |

Yeah, we talked about it at a branch meeting recently. Electoral politics may not be our focus, but we certainly are always willing to endorse politicians who we think are worthwhile. We're all thrilled she's running, she's done so much good work with so many things, and it's always a treat whenever she speaks at marches and events.
