How many more points does Laine need than Matthews to win the Calder? With the Jets out, all I want is for Patrik to win trophies.

Werenski, Murray, Marner et al chose a bad year to be rookies.

Maf is actually playing pretty well lately and the Pens have a lot of games in March so probably more just resting Murray.

I'm a little worried that Maf playing halfway decent will tempt them to yank Murray the minute he has a bad playoff game, though. They nearly cost themselves the Cup last year with that stupidity.

I think whole playing center, worse linemates, playing in Toronto thing gives Matthews a bit of a buffer. Laine probably needs to outscore him a decent amount to get it.

Laine only needs 1 more even strength goal to tie Crosby's rookie year, and 6 for Ovechkin.

The Jets PP sucks. Scheifele, Laine and Ehlers are in the top 15 for even strength points, but the Jets don't have anyone in the top 50 for PP points.

These three are the finalists if Matthews and Laine don't exist and that's a commentary on how good they are, yet how two of the three will be lost while the other gets title of "2017 Calder Third Place Finisher".

Baseball can be boring but it's your fault if you pick the team that has rules against facial hair and long hair. Meanwhile in hockey everyone is canadian with a nickname that's just their last name with "er" or "y" tacked on the end

Is this a question of "personality" or also of "stardom"?
Because it may be true that NFL and NBA stars have no real personality as just mentioned (I know very little about the american big three sportshappeningses) but I think those leagues are "star-"led in marketing and teams come second.

I am of course aware of the fact that hockey is very no-personality and no-household names, but I marked that into beaing really a "canadian" instead of an "american" game, (fits finnish mentality too), but it surprised me to know baseball works this way too. Are there historical reasons? Star culture seems to be the american way to do things.

Baseball is the absolute worst for "unwritten rules" bullshit and this has been the case for decades. Meanwhile in hockey you have opposing coaches and parents threatening 6-year-old Sidney Crosby because he's "too good".

I think Laine's got to be the front runner, stuff I read seems to give him an edge and everyone loves goals.

Plus I think Matthews getting it would hit a performance bonus and the Leafs cap don't need that

Well, it should be Laine if he outproduces Matthews, given the trend of "give the Calder to the rookie with the most points (more GP as a tiebreaker)". Like right now I'd say Laine wins the Calder with the 5 point edge, if Matthews gets within 1-2 points he probably wins because  NHL writers.

I could also see Laine winning if he managed to lead the league in goals, which isn't out of the realm of possibility but it'd be tough with Winnipeg having played more games than any team in the league.

Why do you think that?

Because of the mad hype Matthews has gotten by playing in the Toronto market?

Media types like Jeff O'Neil hyping him as the most valuable player in the league, Mackenzie and LeBrun both claiming Matthews is a top 20 NHL player today and Friedman saying that he hoped Laine didnt win the Rocket cause it would make the choice for the Calder "impossible". That last one was really convinced me that Laine has no chance at the Calder. A rookie winning the Rocket should not make the Calder a hard choice. It should make it a really loving easy one actually.

Why do you think the NHL writers are going to pick anyone other than Matthews?

It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

I'm sure other sports are like this too but yeah hockey parents are ridiculous.

The worst though is when you get those youth hockey coaches that teach their teams to play dirty. I hope there's less of that now but that poo poo was common as gently caress when I was growing up and is the type of behavior that inevitably inflames the parents too.
