like it or not, but you're absolutely going to have to phrase things using "their terms" to get any real foothold because we're starting from square one

Although there are tankie memes getting posted that are bad bad bad. It's the first time I have cringed at any DSA thing.

facebook comments are always bad because facebook is a terrible website. I'm under the impression that anyone who said that at a DSA meeting would be asked to leave.

We are never gonna convert Sally Albright or whoever the gently caress

whats next, we aren't gonna teach Marx or Lenin in the reading groups?

Gonna drop anti-capitalism next?

Yeah DSA are just socdems but compromising on your beliefs will just make you a poo poo dem in the end

Like you're assuming people are stupid. We had our chapter's Political Officer teach the fundamentals of Marxism, including the basics and background of both Marxism and capitalism, in like 30 minutes in simple and easy terms.

If you think people are stupid babies to be coddled not only will that dilute our message but turn people off harder than the strawman you build

Because there already exists one, and its of an ok size relative to the chapter. And I tried proposing an idea to form an elections workgroup to figure out who to primary and where, maybe even have some of us run in local elections but was shouted down under the "we are not a party" mantra.

I've tried reaching out on FB about attending protests but only a few people ever show up so I think actually organizing anything outside of meetings is a no-go.

My DSA chapter seems to be a nexus of people who already are apart of other groups who simply do things that those other groups do rather than organizing anything with DSA affiliation.

My DSA made a pretty admirable effort to recruit disillusioned dems, pretty great turnout. But guess what, after several months of not doing anything people lost interest. Not even social events. So this is what I mean, being careful and on eggshells just makes people bored. Not the ideology.

In the end a DSA chapter is just a social group. Gotta do poo poo together to stay together.

And how does this tie into toning down the "comrade" and dank memes for public facing things like your DSA Twitter account / Facebook / website?

Because nobody really is dumb enough to be turned off by joking use of comrade. Or socialist memes. They're jokes, people get it.

You know maybe some people take it too far but it seems like complete nonsense to walk on eggshells for no reason. People are easily receptive to anti-capitalism if they're not sociopaths, you don't need to dance around it. I mean all it took was a 5 minute explanation of wage slavery w/ historical context and several people I know were then on board with the DSA during that meeting.

Oh cool, so my anecdotal evidence is just made up then. Thanks for clarifying.

And I'm glad you've figured out the one secret to make people "easily receptive to anti-capitalism" in the Western world. You should probably write a book or something.

dude whats your problem talk to me

My problem is that myself, and a few others, made a comment about "comrade" or dank memes scaring off people who may otherwise be receptive to a change towards socialism. Socialism is already a scary word for the vast majority of the US population, easing that transition into the ideas behind it before scaring them off is important. You then came in and said that we were assuming people were stupid and that we were going to implode the DSA or some other sort of craziness, thus the off meds comment.

My point of view is this: Keep the "comrade" and "full gay communism now" stuff to a limit when using official chapter communication channels. The person running the meeting should not be throwing out "comrade" to a room full of potential new members. The person running Twitter / Facebook should show some restraint as well. That doesn't mean that individual members can't post crazy meme tweets or joke about overthrowing capitalism or whatever. I'm just saying the official channels should look at least somewhat professional, otherwise you are going to scare off people who might otherwise be receptive to your ideas.

Obviously there's some disagreement on this, but I don't think it's a radical position to take.

i like the word "comrade," there's no good synonym for it ('ally,' of course, is claimed by the Woke). no-one here's been scared off by it yet but this is california. maybe i should begin footnoting it with a brief explanation when i use it.

maybe you can use the french spelling "camarade" (pronounced, roughly: "comrade")

I feel like shying away from comrade would just play into the "socialism is a bad" idea. Plus, anyone who's so put off by the word they won't join an organization who uses it probably doesn't support socialism.

also just co-opt the word paisan. It comes from the root word peasant, means "countrymen/friend" and people just think you are maybe Italian mobsters or something.

Serious post: compatriot formally and friend informally would be the best options imo. Bro, dude, brother/sister, whatever is gendered and, from the most recent discussion at my local committee, disenfranchises the non-binary in our ranks, and sometimes reinforces patriarchy on a group fighting against it.

Honestly, if you can't explain yourself clearly and persuasively enough for a 12 year old to follow you, you don't really understand what you're talking about, and that goes for about any subject (quantum physics, the history of the spring and autumn period of chinese history, socialism, etc)
