I don't know that I have the rhetorical skills to right that ship, but it seems like a much worse problem than fighting over memes. facebook comments are always bad because facebook is a terrible website. I'm under the impression that anyone who said that at a DSA meeting would be asked to leave.

like all you have to do is channel the massive amount of "gently caress YOU" in the national discourse right now to the rich and actually show up to fight for people and you'd sweep elections all over the place

Business Gorillas posted:i mean you're obviously passionate about it, why not channel that anger about the right things not being done and take it upon yourself to start a marxist reading group? Because there already exists one, and its of an ok size relative to the chapter. And I tried proposing an idea to form an elections workgroup to figure out who to primary and where, maybe even have some of us run in local elections but was shouted down under the "we are not a party" mantra. I've tried reaching out on FB about attending protests but only a few people ever show up so I think actually organizing anything outside of meetings is a no-go. My DSA chapter seems to be a nexus of people who already are apart of other groups who simply do things that those other groups do rather than organizing anything with DSA affiliation.

Internet Explorer posted:Okay. In that case please reread the previous posts on the topic and then read your post. My DSA made a pretty admirable effort to recruit disillusioned dems, pretty great turnout. But guess what, after several months of not doing anything people lost interest. Not even social events. So this is what I mean, being careful and on eggshells just makes people bored. Not the ideology. In the end a DSA chapter is just a social group. Gotta do poo poo together to stay together.

And how does this tie into toning down the "comrade" and dank memes for public facing things like your DSA Twitter account / Facebook / website? Let alone your comment of "like you are assuming people are stupid."

Internet Explorer posted:And how does this tie into toning down the "comrade" and dank memes for public facing things like your DSA Twitter account / Facebook / website? Because nobody really is dumb enough to be turned off by joking use of comrade. Or socialist memes. They're jokes, people get it. You know maybe some people take it too far but it seems like complete nonsense to walk on eggshells for no reason. People are easily receptive to anti-capitalism if they're not sociopaths, you don't need to dance around it. I mean all it took was a 5 minute explanation of wage slavery w/ historical context and several people I know were then on board with the DSA during that meeting.

Phi230 posted:dude whats your problem talk to me My problem is that myself, and a few others, made a comment about "comrade" or dank memes scaring off people who may otherwise be receptive to a change towards socialism. Socialism is already a scary word for the vast majority of the US population, easing that transition into the ideas behind it before scaring them off is important. You then came in and said that we were assuming people were stupid and that we were going to implode the DSA or some other sort of craziness, thus the off meds comment. My point of view is this: Keep the "comrade" and "full gay communism now" stuff to a limit when using official chapter communication channels. The person running the meeting should not be throwing out "comrade" to a room full of potential new members. The person running Twitter / Facebook should show some restraint as well. That doesn't mean that individual members can't post crazy meme tweets or joke about overthrowing capitalism or whatever. I'm just saying the official channels should look at least somewhat professional, otherwise you are going to scare off people who might otherwise be receptive to your ideas. Obviously there's some disagreement on this, but I don't think it's a radical position to take. Internet Explorer has issued a correction as of 22:44 on Mar 15, 2017 |

I feel like shying away from comrade would just play into the "socialism is a bad" idea. Plus, anyone who's so put off by the word they won't join an organization who uses it probably doesn't support socialism.

Is "comrade" a scarier word than "socialist" (which is probably current because "communist" is way too scary)?

Honestly, if you can't explain yourself clearly and persuasively enough for a 12 year old to follow you, you don't really understand what you're talking about, and that goes for about any subject (quantum physics, the history of the spring and autumn period of chinese history, socialism, etc)
