What does this mean?

An engine isn't inherently good at RPG cutscenes. For triple A games whatever engine they used is heavily modified to suit their needs by the engineers working on the game. When people say it's the wrong engine for the job they mean poo poo like Star Citizen which is trying to use an engine designed for relatively small playable areas and expand it to planet size terrain. I seriously doubt there's some inherent design flaw that makes facial animation impossible. The reason the animations look hosed up is they did a botch job of it.

Here's a cutscene from BF3 that isn't loving horrible:

I killed Kaidan because I played as Femshep and he was creepy. No I did not give you 'mixed signals', Lieutenant, let's see if you can interpret this bomb more successfully.

But I also disliked Kaidan's semi-wheezing vocal delivery and that prompts a question about Andromeda: is there a more normal range of (non-Salarian) men's voices than in previous MEs? ME2 in particular was nearly all gravel.

Honestly, a ten hour demo of a Bioware RPG seems kind of like a mistake for EA. I'm not saying Andromeda will be great, but judging by the Bioware games I've played in the past, ten hours isn't good enough to judge these games.

This is true enough I guess, but... I've seen big seemingly good RPGs fall off the cliff later in the game, and I've seen decent/good ones turn out brilliantly, but I can't recall one starting out this bland and paint-by-numbers that turned the plot and characters around. It's possible that MEA's got a fantastic narrative and great character development later in the game. But I'm highly skeptical based on the first 6 hours.

It's possible the game sucks, it's possible it's really good. I kind of wish I could try this ten hour demo myself but I'm not paying $5 for the privilege of playing something for ten hours a few days early.

It's possible to get Ashley suggesting you save the Council. The way ME1 works is, at every big decision point one of your two squaddies will always advocate the paragon option and one will always advocate the renegade option. Who takes which side depends on where they are on the scale: Liara <-> Kaidan <-> Tali <-> Garrus <-> Ashley <-> Wrex. Whoever is to the left of your two squaddies will advocate the paragon choice. Whoever is on the right will advocate the renegade option.

That can't be right :turianass: I recently played and Tali was suggesting "what did the council ever do for you" while Garrus was hostile to the idea.

You did a super job wrapping things up! And I'm not just saying that because I have to!

Utnayan posted:

So basically Mac Walters was a great character writer back in the day. (ME1 and ME2) but throughout that success got way too big for his britches. Over time, he became what amounts to a ruthless dictator in the office, tossing out ideas of other writers and staff/editors, saying it was because of him Mass Effect even existed in the first place, etc etc. After the first stop start of ME:A, he started completely alienating the entire writing staff. No one wanted to work with him, his ego, or the continual conflicts. (Which could have been added pressure he didn't handle well to be fair, but... whatever. Other people face that same pressure and don't treat people like poo poo)

People started leaving. In droves. Long time standing talent (Like Cameron Harris - who had an extraordinary amount of talent and experience in the games biz and worked with NIntendo, Microsoft, Bioware, etc), people like Chris Schlerf, etc. All their talent was being blind-sided and not being used. Cameron said she left for another opp in Seattle - that opp was a freelance gig she could have done anywhere :)

Anyway, if you ever played Mafia 2, think Daniel Vavra and the relationship with 2K when they his story into bits and pieces to sell as DLC, and it completely whacked (No pun intended) the story into scattered pieces. (Joe's adventures was supposed to take place after Vito went to Prison and was supposed to be in the full game) and tied very well into the complete story arc.

Anyway, they all left. Along with animators, programmers, you name it. They had basically had enough of EA. (poo poo, who hasn't by now) and a few other select people that lost their minds.

What is left is the result of a hamstrung 3 region development core where no one spoke to each other and were trying to jam not only a story that was rewritten in 2016 into a launch title, but another reason why the dialogue is so phoned in and the story is all over the place. EA wanted this on their quarterly books. QA was non-existent (As always) and not even 3rd party contractors were brought in this time.

Add to that little to no QA.

It doesn't take much to realize when something goes into complete development hell. The blame for this falls squarely on the unethical, and liar, Mac Walters - and EA Executive management.
