East/West Germany isn't exactly a fair comparison to make. East Germany at least had an industrial base and the entire population did not follow a cult of personality. Their population hadn't undergone physiological changes due to decades of malnutrition. The East Germans did not view the West Germans as their mortal, eternal enemies. And still, reunifying East and West has cost trillions of dollars. North/South Korea will be much, much worse. Oh and not to mention the majority of defectors from the North come across the Chinese border, not the Korean border. So we'd either have; 1) A flood of humanity streaming across the Yalu, which the Chinese will love 2) A flood of humanity attempting to cross the most heavily mined and defended land on the planet. Both are bad options.
