It's yet another day in the wasteland.

radintorov posted:

Of note is that originally this wasn't so, but some people in the larger ships started ramming players that were flying the smaller ones (in particular newbies in Sidewinders), so Frontier implemented this system to curb this.
And it worked.
It also led to players enforcing the speed limit for other players in larger ships. :v:

Ah, so this was the change I was asking about?

I think what confused me about that clip was that it didn't seem to be moving all that fast. Then again, scale and distance always makes that difficult to judge with larger ships.

Anything over 100 m/sec counts as speeding. 'Speed bumps' basically rub up against the station to reduce their hull down to 1-2% integrity, then ram an incoming ship at just under 100 m/sec - if they were moving over 100 m/s, the victim speeder gets tagged as a criminal. A plain old collision is a fine, but a collision that ends up killing somebody is a bounty-worthy crime, which generally leads to the station and any local security ganging up on the poor bastard offender.

Blame griefing assholes. It was specifically implemented to combat the kind of bellends who sat in stations ramming people to death when they tried to dock.

At the end of the day, if that clipper player had not been speeding, there would have been no issue. So, PEBCAK basically.

I stopped using the docking computer when it started just hanging out outside the mailslot for 5 minutes then giving up if there was any decent amount of traffic in the area. Does it work every time now?

In other news, I finished getting Imperial rank up to Duke last night and bought my Cutter. Frontier definitely should make getting Duke rank harder, I mean all I did was run a few thousand missions that barely required any though on my part. Kill some skimmers, scan some databanks, deliver some data, go find a 1m wide canister floating somewhere around a planet while doing 200,000 km/s-- I mean it is all so trivial. They should definitely prevent people from stacking missions because that makes it even more brain dead. I mean sometimes I was actually just watching youtube and getting Imperial rank. Definitely should be patched to make it a lot harder. :v:

The Cutter definitely doesn't look big enough from the cockpit. I ran the nacelles into the sides of mailslots like 4 times last night because I forget that the ship isn't just what I see in front of me.

Just keep doing missions for factions aligned with the superpowers and it'll come. Combat related missions actually increase rep marginally faster than non-combat ones, so that can help too.

I turned in a mission that required 108 kills in a CZ and a mission that required me to scan a surface installation. Each one rewarded 1% progress, so I wouldn't worry too much about the nature of a mission unless it's an easier mission.

Also: when you're in a particular area and, say, 3 of the factions in your station are Space America factions alongside 2 or 3 factions that are not, do not help out the other factions because sometimes it will have a negative effect on your rep with the Space America factions. Stations are usually inhabited by various opposing factions. Pick a side and don't do jobs for the other side. I hope that makes sense.

Also also: there's a school of thought that says you should endeavour to get allied with Space America in a certain system, then once you are BFF's move on to a neighbouring Space America system and repeat. This has the effect of you being friendly all around the Space America universe and some people say that this gives you much quicker progression through the ranks. I've done this and it seems to work well.

You could keep the MCs, but put a gimballed beam in the big slot. Not the most exciting build, but effective.

Or reverse it; 4 lil' beams and one big gently caress off MC. Another solid classic.

I might try that myself, actually. My current huge MC + x4 beams chips away at hulls a little slower than I'd like. A couple small MCs would give me some extra oomph and let me work a corrosive back into the mix. :pervert:

The LR/Focussed blueprints increase shot speed and make aiming easier.
I am running my FdL on 4 fixed efficient med. beams and a huge LR cannon (bugged IMO) or a LR PAC.
A gimballed huge MC is the most efficient choice, though.

So I'm looking at fitting out a DBX in anticipation of the balance changes, and running it as a pure explorer. So far I've got this - it's basically maxed out for jump range, with heatsinks and AFMs for heat damage (with the highest-rated power plant to cut further down on heat generation), scanners and vehicle for exploration. I've never done the whole long-range exploration thing before (and I want to check out SGR A*), am I missing anything crucial?

Also, am I better off heat-dissipation wise running a 3A or 4A power plant? they both have the same efficiency stat per coriolis, but is there anything else to consider aside from the lower mass of the 3A?

No, I'm looking at the beta shipyard now and even stripped down to absolute bare bones with the best possible modded FSD it's not getting 50. But mid-40s should still be easy to achieve, and that's a perfectly good exploration ship jump range.

Unless you're going around specifically hunting for aliens, I'd skip the corrosion hold and stick in a light shield. It's good for preventing dings when landing on planets and station bumps, which can add up over time if you're in the middle of nowhere. The DBX is a super cold ship, so you should have no issues with the lower rank on the reactor.

Four heat sink launchers is kinda overkill. Unless you habitually fly straight into stars, you shouldn't need to use them. I've gone entire 5,000ly trips in my AspE without firing even one heat sink.
