Texas Tribune posted:RICHARDSON — U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas, faced a raucous town hall Saturday as he sought to defend the GOP’s plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, among other issues that have spawned fierce opposition under President Donald Trump. Here's a good writeup about the hearing for HB81 (lowering marijuana possession from a misdemeanor to a ticket) that was held a week and some back: http://txcann.com/texas-marijuana-decriminalization-hearing-lone-opponent/ I attended, it was a bit slow (as hearings tend to be) but overall I felt good being there to show support. A couple dozen folks gave testimony, with one single guy, a DA from Ector County, giving a pretty weak argument against the bill. It's almost certain to pass out of committee (if it hasn't already) so it's just a matter of when it gets on calendar and onto the House floor, and then where the accompanying Senate bill is. Haven't heard any update as to whether the medical marijuana expansion is moving forward, but there's still time left in the session if they can stfu about the bathroom bill...

Admittedly reading only his side of the facts, I'd tend to side with Perry. But yeah I'm glad to know that campaign contributions can still be used to lean on people with big political clout to get your privileged son what he wants. Seems like a good use of the Secretary of Energy's time.

Went to Beto's Austin event at Scholz Garten today. Pretty cool, although his stump speech wasn't the best. Luckily he has another 8 months to work on it. The general sense I got from the Democrats in the know is that people are more excited about him than Castro, but of course I live in the Travis County bubble.

Beto is the real deal and awesome. He had a steadfast pledge to not accept PAC or corporate money and seems legit about it (I pressed him pretty hard on this). Additionally, he committed and said outright that Singe Payer is the goal.

Spacebump posted:Not accepting PAC money seems like a significant disadvantage when trying to flip a seat. It likely is, but his strategy is not taking that money will be a selling point for him. It's an uphill battle and being able to say Cruz is just a corporate stooge will be a significant advantage. Additionally, the PAC money he'll bring in will be minimal compared to Cruz, because PACs are front runners and they don't think he'll win.
