I don't see how it actually changes anything. North Korea attacking South Korea in any force means Seoul likely gets wrecked and North Korea's utter annihilation, which everyone is aware of and has been the status quo for a while. They can get away with the border skirmishing they've been doing for decades but that doesn't matter anyway. China doesn't give a gently caress about or like North Korea at all they just don't want the refugee crisis or another American ally on the border.

Consensus in the mil hist thread is that the artillery positions would be crushed the minute they fire, possibly getting just one shot off. That is if they can fire since it's mainly 70s soviet gear in god knows what shape.

I'm in Thailand right now. First time in SEA. Being 6'8" I expected some stares as attention but I really haven't seen that. However, I did a boat trip to phi phi and bamboo island and got mobbed by some Chinese tourists wanting to take some selfies. It was fun but after the 50th photo I started to get bitter and basically jogged outta there. Was still fun though. I felt like a celebrity. Without the money.

China is pissed off about THAAD because they think it opens NK up for invasion. They are well aware of it's capabilities, and how it is not going to affect them directly, but they are frightened of the possibilities it opens up with regards to NK's "ace in the hole" (their alleged nuclear missiles).

:china: "If THAAD can shoot down any NK missiles, then the US and ROK can invade them, defeat them in 5 days, blanket the country with food aid, then establish airbases and missile sites right on our border!"

Really, the ROK Navy should have just upgraded their Aegis Destroyers to include the ABM package the Japan has in theirs, then they could have avoided the whole THAAD issue altogether and China would have never known.

Maybe they didn't upgrade their Aegis destroyers in order to antagonize China.

I talked briefly with a Japanese guy here who didn't have tiptop English recently.

Him: "Do you like Japanese girls or Korean girls?"

Me: "Oh, I don't know. Probably Japanese. Korean girls are fine too. For Koreans it's just the men that are a problem."

Him: "Oh?"

Me: "They're assholes."

Him: "Assholes?"

Me: "Like angry monkeys."

Him: Nodding Japanesely: "haha yes"

He also let me know that he didn't like Chinese. Nice guy overall.

That is actually a thing in HR. If you write the job desc- err, JDs, you are writing the judgment criteria for who gets interviews/hired vs. who doesn't. If you are bad or inexperienced at it, you can really screw up by always getting the wrong person for the job.

So, yeah, in that horrifying little slice of corporate life, it's a thing.

In other news, china played a shockingly good game in the World Cup qualifying round against South Korea and won. China has three of their last four games away, and still look like long shots to qualify, but props to china for showing up at home and playing a great game against a team that historically has owned Asia (along with Japan)

And for the life of me, I can’t blame the Chinese. Personally, I do believe that as the decades go by, they will assume world leadership, and while they will make some grand-scale blunders, I’d much rather see them in charge than the Russians (which, these days, includes the current resident of the White House).

Gan’s research on China’s housing sector has also made waves. He figures that 70 percent of total household wealth is made up of the value of apartments. About 50 million already-sold units sit empty, much more than some investment banks had estimated. (The government doesn’t release national data on empty apartments.) China has a vacancy rate of 18 percent, compared with 13 percent in the U.S., Gan says.

That's a recipe for success if I ever heard one. Basically rich people are buying and selling apartments back and forth from each other, at higher and higher prices, until it reaches a point where they realize that nobody wants to buy empty apartments that they will never occupy.

Also, I'm wondering it that takes into account Apt blocks that were built in ghost cities that were never sold or occupied.

Do you still see the old style bills in China anymore?

When I first went there you'd still see the older notes sometimes where each note had 2 ethnic minorities or something on it. I remember they were phasing them out for all-Mao money.

Thinking back I think Guangdong had tons of jiao notes while anhui always had coins? Or maybe vice versa? It's been ages and lol jiao.

The notes for < 1RMB still have ethnic minorities on them.

Coin/Bill thing for that stuff seems to be geographic for what's more common, but you see both anywhere in the country. I think its like shanghai up to bejing likes the coins while southern to western china prefers bills for whatever reason.
