I still don't understand how the Avs are so terrible unless their players just quit. Varlamov wasn't hurt all year, the defense has a couple good players in EJ and Barrie, the offense should be lethal but isn't.

It's almost all the offense. As soon as the team said "Start worrying about playing defense/Corsi" there has been no offense to speak of.

Plus EJ was out for a few months, as well with Varlamov fighting injuries as he is wont to do. We used our fourth string goalie tonight. Not that that's an excuse for the Abortion On Ice that was tonight's game.

There's no reason a team with Landeskog/Duchene/Rantanen/MacKinnon are playing this horribly. None.

I feel for Condon. He was really solid after Carey went down, and his play probably declined heavily because he wasn't ready to be the guy for as much as he was last year. I also feel for Scrivens, but that's because I just think he's a nice guy.

At the end of the day, Montoya came here with the mission of "I'm going to be the best backup goalie in the world", and I don't think you can ask a guy to be ready to stay in for 10 goals against.

The Habs haven't necessarily had the best statistical backups, but they all seem like great guys and I really hope they enjoy success wherever they go.
Just not at the expense of the Habs.

In addition to McDavid having a 6 point lead for 1st, Draisaitl is now 10th in points with 69 (nice). They're also have the highest combined point total at 156, 3 better than Crosby/Malkin.

Draisaitl's gonna get paid.

I'd guess it was like a pair of scissors.. his finger tip got pinched between his own stick and Crosby's as he got chopped.

DGB has a pretty fun breakdown of the 97 Avs/Wings brawl

E:

quote:

Paul Devorski

His role: He's the referee for this whole mess, and he could not be any less impressed with any of it. You can see him at various points, calmly observing the action like a bored lunch monitor.

Hey, here's a fun game: Try to guess how many penalty minutes Devorski gave out for everything we just watched. Remember, the Senators and Flyers got over 400 PIM a few years later for one good line brawl followed by a parade of awkward wrestling matches. What's your over-under on what Devorski dropped on the whole Wings/Avs debacle? Can we set the starting point at roughly 7,000?

The answer: 22. He gave out 22 penalty minutes. Combined. For the whole thing.

I feel for Avs fans and maybe the players, but this feels like some sort of cosmic justice for the Kroenkes taking the Rams and putting them in a market where somehow fewer people give a poo poo.

Was the Crosby/Methot thing intentional or incidental?

Does anybody know why Calgary wasn't more patient with Daniel Tkaczuk? I was looking at his profile on hockeydb and he had 11 pts in 19 games as a 21/22 yr old, which seems decent to me. What gives? They traded him for Roman Turek after like 20 reasonably productive games. Weird.

To further pile on the Avs Are Bad wagon, they're only the fourth team in the post-lockout era to reach the 50 regulation loss mark. The other teams:

2013-2014 and 2014-2015 Sabres - 51 regulation losses
2014-2015 Coyotes - 50 regulation losses

Oh by the way, this year's Avs still have NINE games left. I thought those Sabres squads were dire but hoooly poo poo this Avalanche team is on another level of terrible.

11 points in 19 would be great from a prospect now, but I don't think it was particularly impressive for the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean, Jagr had 121 points the year you're talking about, for example.

Also, if you look at the Flames roster that year, it seems like they had a lot of young talent (Savard and Iginla both 23) and he probably seemed expendable.
