My brother's car does the text read thing. It's hilarious because it's really poor quality and clearly wasn't tested that well. If someone sends him a picture it starts to read the Hex. E3F2A921D... and it will not shut up until you take the key out of the car, and since it's a fob this means parking the car on the side of the road and walking away. This also turns off the built in GPS navigation voice making is extra funny.

Guys, I've been messing around with Tiered Storage on Server 2012. I have a Dell Poweredge R720 with an MD1200 drive tray attached to it.

Looking at this article https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2013/10/20/storage-spaces-how-to-configure-storage-tiers-with-windows-server-2012-r2/ it seems I should see the individual disks listed as in his first screenshot. I may just be a dumbhead who is missing something simple, but I cannot get the OS to see this storage at all without first going into Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, and creating a RAID array in there, and selecting my hot spare drives etc.

Then when I go into the disk management or Tiered Storage menu, it sees it as all one disk, which is expected. What I am kind of worried about is that if I set up tiered storage now, it will also ask me to select disks for spares, etc. Isn't what I am doing here, creating a hardware RAID array, and then on top of that with tiered storage, kind of basically running a software RAID on top of it? Sort of like what happened to Linus in that video that gets linked here so often?

I don't have experience with the MD1200 but if you see one gigantic HD in Storage Spaces, that means the MD1200 is in some type of RAID configuration. I think you want to put it JBOD mode and then the disks should show up correctly in Storage Spaces. At that point you are using Windows software RAID basically. I don't see how you can create tiered storage with Storage Spaces without being in JBOD mode. Could be wrong though.

If you're using a PERC rather than an HBA then surely you just see the logical volumes that the controller is presenting?

However, in this state, it appears the OS just doesn't see the disks attached to the PERC H810 adapter at all. It won't see them unless I boot to RAID setup or else run the Dell openmanage app to create an array first... which is what I've always done in the past, before we wanted to use tiered storage.

It may just be possible that I need to boot to RAID setup and select something to enable JBOD mode in there, and I've just never noticed it before because we never looked into presenting disks to the OS this way.

e: From googling, looks like there is maybe an HBA mode I can enable by booting into RAID setup. Of course this thing is in production with its existing array attached to another controller right now, so I will have to check this after hours.

AD CA needs 1 commandline command and it'll start making sha256 certs, i did it for all the certs at work some time ago it's really easy (apart from having a really dumb issue with offline root ca because windows is loving dumb)

The reason to upgrade to sha256 is because "your employees can spy on you/read your email, boss".

I would check the configuration (in the PERC) of the individual physical disks themselves. Make sure they are showing as "Non-RAID" as opposed to "Ready" or "Active". I've had the same experience where if you configure them as "RAID-ready" but don't actually add them into a logical disk, they are hidden by the PERC. Changing them to non-RAID disks passes them straight through to the OS, so you would be able to see them in Windows setup, etc.

1) inertia/laziness
2) "they're internal, so it doesn't matter"
3) "it's fine, actually"
and none of those are good arguments. Getting someone else to understand that those arguments are bad will be difficult.

So a couple days ago, he comes over to IT asking for a Mac, like we are the Apple store and have bunch in the back. Told him he could get a new iMac or MacBook Pro, printed out the price and whatever for him to give to his dad. Needs something to edit those 3-4 video projects on!

Dad must have said no, because they made our marketing director give the kid the 2011 27" iMac that we gave the marketing director to remote in to his current 27" iMac (long story). Kid takes it home, can't get in because it has the marketing directors password on it (let's call him C). So on Friday afternoon he comes over to see us again.

Dipshit: "Hey whats the password to our Macs?"
Me: "The what? What are you trying to do?"
Dipshit: "I'm trying to get into Chris's Mac, I need to use it to make videos"
Me: "You're not setup on it, just have him sign into it"
Dipshit: "It's at my house"
Me: "What?"
Dipshit: "It's the old one you guys gave him"
Me: "It's at your house?"
Dipshit: "Yea"
Me: "Why don't you bring it in here so we can, you know, set it up with iMovie and all that poo poo and make you an account on it?"

We end up giving him the admin password on it (we set it up a little differently so it's not any password we use for anything else), he can just go hog wild.

Half hour later his mom calls in.

Mom: "Why won't you give dipshit the password to Chris's computer?"
Me: "We did"
Mom: "He just called me and said the screensaver came on and he can't get back onto it"
Me: "It's the password I just gave him over the phone a little while ago"
Mom: "Why didn't you just give him C's password?"
Me: "Because he's not C."
Mom: "So he can't get into the computer? Why is this so difficult?"
Me: "Yes, he can get on to it, I remoted in and had him sign in and everything"

Hey you know maybe if you explained what you guys were doing and asked us to help when it wasn't 2:00 on a Friday afternoon, and didn't just go taking computers back from people...

We had a window of downtime this weekend as the client's building had a full power shutdown. We were going to do a LUN migration on their SAN but ran into some issues that will probably require contacting the vendor. The project coordinator wanted me to keep pressing forward (basically blind) and "try a few things". At a certain point I put a stop to it because "a few things" involved using commands that could put client data at risk and/or break the SAN. I just know he's going to be all pissy about it for a couple of days because it means he'll have to find another downtime window with the client.

Because working with a client to find a downtime window once we get a better handle on what to do is totally equal with breaking their entire SAN. :jerkbag:

It is mostly annoying from a budgetery perspective, if it wasn't for having to replace these I was going to be able to come in just under budget for the financial year and now I am going to get a grilling for going over.

What are the specs? I'm typing this on an SP3 right now and I definitely don't just use it for some email and calendar management.

I'm learning to manage Azure resources, instances, networks, etc... due to our clientele commitments. As someone who's just starting out on this, I've noticed some really dumb things:

There's no way to copy VM's/Blobs across storage accounts... except with powershell
There's no way to create disks from blobs... except with powershell
There's no way to rename blobs... except to create a copy of the blob... in powershell
There's no way to rename disks. At all. Not even in powershell. You have to delete the disk and re-create it in powershell with the same blob file.

You know, I'm beginning to see a theme here.

On the plus side, I'm becoming quite proficient in powershell.

A desktop computer came in for diagnosis and repair, all I was told while being handed the machine was that it's "not booting".

Right off the bat, I can't help noticing that that case looks a little, well, the worse for wear.

Yeah that's a good several inches of denting there. Back side is the same. It looks like somone bent it over a cinder block and stomped on it, or dropped it down a flight of stairs.

The back was dented in too, enough to press up against the motherboard and pop the RAM out of it's slots. That's a loose DIMM at the bottom right behind the hard drive.
