I'll keep an open mind about new IPs but Nintendo has so many old ones I want to see sequels for.

It's interesting that there are two new IPs for the Switch (1-2-Switch and ARMS) that could have very easily been released under current IP titles with a slight rebranding (WarioWare: Switched! and Punch-Out... World? I dunno).

I think that 1-2-Switch might, at the very least, had slightly better reception if it had the Wario game branding, like Game & Wario (which was seriously underrated).

Honestly I'm torn on the concept of new IPs. Enough changed with Breath of the Wild that Nintendo could have easily rewritten the story/setting slightly and released it under a new name and no one would have thought twice about it, but would it have had the same hype/reception if they had?

The problem isn't that Nintendo doesn't release new IPs, the problem is that they release new games under the same IP that are too similar to previous games. Sometimes a drastic change works (Breath of the Wild), sometimes it doesn't (Other M). The problem is that it's easy to poo poo out another New Super Mario Bros title and it'll sell to the Nintendo diehards anyway , so Nintendo's taken a "eh, why bother" stance, which is how we ended up with Ocarina of Time, Ocarina of Time: Into Darkness, and Ocarina of Time: Groose edition.

They seem to be aware of their stagnation, and here's to hoping for more of Breath of The Wild in the Switch's future instead of Paper Mario: I dunno, the gimmick is Velcro this time?

I was actually thinking that while playing 1 2. If it had a wario ware theme it would've been way better. Instead it's too millenials and lol random for its own good.

BUT I KEPT BUYING THEM AS THEY RELEASED ANYWAY. "This time it'll be different! Look, they put Paper Mario in with Mario & Luigi! Certainly that will fix the issues I have with both series instead of having the issues from both!" :v:

Intelligent Systems is practically part of Nintendo. Unless you don't consider Fire Emblem or Paper Mario to be Nintendo-developed games.

What technically is the list of Nintendo IPs? Because franchises like Pokemon and Xenoblade seem to belong to Nintendo, but if they don't count as Nintendo IPs, what does?

Is 1 2 Switch not Nintendo's intellectual property, or is it not new?

As far as I can figure out, it is both of those things and is therefore a "new ip".

I feel like the underlying assumption is "if you made basically a carbon copy of 1 2 Switch and slapped a different label on it, how much poo poo would you be in"

It's pretty hard to make the argument that "motion controlled milking" or "motion controlled sword swinging" is "intellectual property". WarioWare is "an IP" based on having something unique outside the minigames to tie together as a game. Rhythm Heaven is "an IP" based on some distinctive art style/recurring characters that you couldn't just throw into another context and expect to get away with.

1 2 Switch, on the other hand, seems to be 100% based on "random people pictures" and "generic art assets". I realize it's probably picking nits, but there's nothing that I can (easily) find about 1 2 Switch where you could take a screenshot of it, set it down in front of someone and have them be able to say "oh yeah that's obviously 1 2 Switch and not Generic Party Game #14123 for Random Game System".

Looking at Metacritic's middle-range reviews, the main consensus seemed to be "the game is beautiful, the story is okay, and the battle system sucks." Essentially, it's "fun but flawed." I wouldn't say that's as overwhelmingly negative as you're implying.

Color Splash may be an OK or even good game, but it came out way too late in the Wii U's cycle and has middling reviews. It's hard for me to really care about it at all.

Not to mention Sticker Star burned me hard. I despised that game, and nothing Color Splash's previews + review cycle did inspired me to give it a honest shot.

Maybe if they brought it over to Switch I'd give it a honest shot, since there's at least a couple of goons willing to defend it.

I mean, I wasn't that big into the original two Paper Marios to begin with, and still thought Sticker Star was trash, but Color Splash was the best/one of the best games I played last year.

I think people were waaaay too focused on the Toad thing instead of the notion that I can still recall the characters even though they're all Toads.

But I also didn't have any of the problems other people have had with the battle system, so
