The way it works now, any ICE agent can issue a hold on a suspected illegal alien without a court order. The local police force is then required to keep that person in custody at their own expense, and if the ICE agent hosed up and the person sues then the local municipality is on the hook for any lawsuits. Rank and file police usually oppose Sanctuary cities because they are fascists. There has always been an easy way to drastically reduce illegal immigration: prosecute the people that employ undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, that option rarely gets implemented because the people that employ undocumented immigrants are the people that finance our politicians.
