To be fair, though, 2003 was probably the first year they weren't complete poo poo though and actually worth watching... which means Vegas should start to see good attendance in like 2030? Oh and also the lockout immediately after didn't help.

I think they'll be fine. They've said the raiders won't have their new stadium until the 2020 season which means the Knights will be starting their 4th season by the time fans have to decide if they want to go to a Knights game or a Raiders game on conflicting Sunday/Monday/Thursday's. Season ticket interest seems solid, and you would think visitors should be able to plug the gap considering the arena is right there on the strip within walking distance of quite a few major casinos.

Yeah, I said it in the other thread but the NFL and the NHL don't really directly compete for viewers/attendees. NFL games are once a week, usually during the day, and NHL games vary. It'd be a different story if Vegas was getting a MLB or NBA team, but I think the Raiders and the Knights should be able to coexist pretty easily.

I seriously doubt the "I don't want to expand to a place that is already a rabid hockey fanbase" feeling is confined to Bettman. And in a business sense, he's not wrong. There's more value in expanding your brand somewhere people don't know your name. The best Candidate for expansion is Seattle (the NHL is desperate for Seattle regardless of how unlikely it looks right now), followed by Quebec (because it actually has a full NHL ready stadium and a fanbase that doesn't really support anyone right now) and then Hamilton/GTA (which comes with strings the size of Mars attached - Toronto, Buffalo and also potentially Ottawa would all want their large cash handout for letting that team exist). KC has a stadium ready to go, but there's no ownership willing to take on the cost and no-one seems to care. Houston seems like a seriously long shot, but a second Texas team would rifle up a bit of rivalry which is always handy. Milwaukee could have a team if they wanted one, but from what I've heard Hockey is mostly a Minnesota thing that UW-M does too.

I still think a pile of tickets will be sold to drunk Canadians there to see their team beat up on a lovely expansion team. Merch might even be purchased ironically. For the continental cup of curling, they're always advertising a $400 package that includes flight, hotel and tickets for curling for like $400, i could see the same thing being done in the local markets for canadian teams. Advertise during oilers games for a $400 3 day flight/hotel/hockey for oilers at vegas, and the arena will be full of oilers jerseys. Same for flames, possibly canucks, jets.

I know Devils games have been like this for a while and I'm sure a few others are like that.

JawKnee posted:B) gently caress you forever Benning if you, in fact, do not protect a 23yo 19 goal scorer. You idiot. Granlund is neither especially young or good. His shooting % was 15.6% this year which is best in the league level quality. Drop that down to a even a very good 12% (nearly a full percentage point higher than his career average coming into this season) and he nets a pedestrian 15 goals or 17 over a full season. Basically, he's been given a top six role because there's no one else to fill it and he's performed around replacement level. Granlund's G/60 this year is currently 8th for all Canucks over the last 4 years sandwiched between Sven Baertschi last year and Bo Horvat in his rookie year. A team isn't going to score zero goals in a year, someone has to put the puck in the net and this year it's Granlund. In 2013-14 Zack Kassian had 14 goals on a similarly high percentage of shots (15.4%) and was younger than Granlund is now. The following year he was on pace for 20. It's not that Kassian's a good goal scorer, it's just that there was no one else there to do it at the time. With that said, Sutter is still quite useless and horribly overpaid. No one should be having any restless nights over the possibility of losing one over the other. ThinkTank fucked around with this message at 20:06 on Apr 4, 2017 |

Schlesische posted:I seriously doubt the "I don't want to expand to a place that is already a rabid hockey fanbase" feeling is confined to Bettman. Delayed, but three things. 1. The main school in Wisconsin with hockey is UW-Madison, commonly shortened to UW. UW-M is UW-Milwaukee, which doesn't have hockey . Secondly, Hockey is the one big four (five if you count soccer) sport where Chicago does NOT have a Wisconsin rival. Any expansion team will likely have a lot of resistance from the 'Hawks if Milwaukee is the primary city for consideration. Thirdly, they built the Bradley Center in the 80s with the intention of drawing an NHL franchise and to give the Bucks a bigger arena (seriously, the Bucks' home was only 10k large at the time, so I don't blame them on that one). The NHL team never happened. The new Bucks arena is capable of hosting hockey games, but only on an "as needed" basis (read: NHL preseason and NCAA Frozen Four), meaning that the basketball court (or any other floor they use) will not have the insulation needed to have it on top of a permanent ice sheet. As much as I'd love a Milwaukee franchise, the chance died when the NHL didn't bother with the Bradley Center.
