My excuse for this one is that the scenes take places from Maru's point of view and it's not like he knows or cares what she's saying.

You can still do it in some beaches in Mexico. It's called going to "Hotel Camarena" (cama arena, sand bed)

Popeye, who despite currently suffering something like twelve gunshot wounds, has nevertheless thrashed his enemy soundly and repeatedly, but not badly enough that this enemy cannot get to a gun shop under his own power.

"I'm going to a gun shop," says Popeye's enemy.

Popeye then advises his enemy as to what sort of gun he ought to buy, then sits down and continues waiting for death, thinking about how much it will suck when his enemy returns with that gun and murders him.

Thimble Theater is great.

This story is supposed to be them renewing their vows or something and not retcon/flashback of their original marriage storyline, right? If so, why is Narda only just meeting the Phantom now? Haven't Mandrake and the Phantom been friends for at least twenty years at this point?

My best guess is "because Lee Falk was 85 and/or didn't care too much about continuity".

e. Actually Falk was 87 and died 6 months after these strips.
