Leon Trotsky 2012 posted:Sony has already said that they are going to resurrect the studio by making The Emoji Movie an annual franchise and I don't have enough faith in America to be sure that they're not wrong. I have hopes that the emoji movie is such a catastrophic bomb that the Venom and Black Cat/Sable movies get shelved and they end up selling the rights all out to Disney. I'm surprised Disney hasn't thrown a couple billion dollar sized offer for the full rights at them just so they don't hurt the brand. It must suck for John Watts and Feige to not even have the full Spider-Man character roster at their disposal when planning future films. Venom is arguably a top 3 Spidey villain and I'm sure they would've had plans for him (or Black Cat) in a future sequel.

I really don't understand Sony's plans here. "Oh, we're building a little bit of goodwill by partnering with Marvel? Let's plan to end that partnership! Oh, and let's start work on some Spider-Man spinoffs, because it's not like that plan last time was a big factor into why we're doing so horrible now! Don't worry guys, we're gonna be making Emoji Movie money!"

Maybe The Emoji Movie will end up being really great. It could surprise us all. The thing that baffles me here is how much gambling Sony is doing. They're supposed to be struggling right now and barely keeping afloat, right? And the deal with Marvel to make Spider-Man is something that helps them survive? So why are they talking about all these future plans in a way that feels so short-sighted? You'd think there'd be more calculated decisions to stabilizing their business instead of going for more big risks banked on hypothetical successes. It's the equivalent of someone losing all their money at the casino, getting a loan to get their life on track, but then going right back and letting it all ride on the tables because they got a good feeling their luck's gonna turn around.

If the Spider-Man spin-offs are going to be non-MCU then it actually does avoid the issues they had before. That just makes Spider-Man and the other stuff independent, with no time wasted referencing/setting up the other.

They need to reassure their shareholders that they have a plan to turn the company around, and that means showing that there's stuff in the pipeline. I don't think they seem to be doing a particularly good job of it, though - my view is that if they'd any sense they'd be bigging up their Equal Partnership With Marvel Studios and Disney and how their original projects will help to supplement that and restore the company's fortunes to a point where they can take capitalise on their Equal Partnership by taking a more active role in expanding the franchise which they are allowing their Equal Partners Marvel and Disney to share. Something like that, anyway.

He puts his arm around Black Widow, zoom in on both their faces as they look into each other's eyes, cut to next scene he is walking through Avengers tower with a broken arm in a cast. He slips on a banana peel and falls down some stairs, but tumbles into a supervillain who was trying to sneak in. An old Mexican janitor asks him "mister, mister, are you alright?" And it's revealed he is the one who was eating the banana. Tony Stark says "You really saved us this time Paul." Cut to, spinning newspaper of hero parade for the Mexican janitor, whom it turns out is also named Paul.

When Paul accidentally takes Tony Stark's Seguway with a flux capacitor in it, he ends up traveling back to the old West, where he meets his ancestor Thadues Blart. Now stuck in the past, Paul must use his modern knowledge to save the town, make his great grandfather into a Hero of the Old West and find a way home.

I think the Amy Pascal comments are being read into a bit more than should be. Imagine that on the internet. Her point was that Sony and Marvel came to a deal together which is something that rarely happens and she just so happened to mention the well known fact that it isn't a deal in perpetuity. As long as the movies make money and are well received it'll be renewed. There's an out for Sony and Marvel both obviously in case it doesn't work out.

Got to see Power Rangers a bit ago, and while it's not the best movie, I was really excited once I got out. I love that it's a movie that doesn't shy away from the source material with lots of little call backs. I really wish more call back movies would follow it's example, doing new things, but not being scared to let Alpha 5 say Ay-yi-yi.
