the problem with protecting innocent vulnerable ppl is that terrible ppl never get what's coming to them. best we can hope is a fiery left-wing populist manages to yell some truth at them and some of it sticks

also, this regretful trump voter is surprisingly (suspiciously?) coherent and engaged, all things considered:

quote:

I’m bitterly disappointed that they couldn’t come up with a better plan. But I’m very glad this particular plan didn’t pass. It fell far short of their promises. And the blame falls on both Republicans in Congress and Trump. They’ve been espousing for years that they’ve been ready to take this on, that they can solve this issue, and right out of the box, they present something that falls far short of the goal. I’m really glad it did not pass.

It has only reinforced my regretful decision to vote for Trump. It’s reduced any optimism I’ve had in going forward, and really undermines the credibility of Trump and the Republican Party.

They need to reach out to Democrats and work with them on revising and improving Obamacare. I would like to see them work on lowering prescription cost, increasing provider choice. This is all possible, but I’m skeptical they’ll do it because of party affiliation, egos, and special interest and lobbyists.

As we have come to find out in the last few months, there are congressional members who are playing the stock market and benefiting from pharmaceutical stocks. I don’t see how they can be objective in passing legislation with these special interests. I feel like there are conflicts of interest. I don’t see Congress passing laws to prevent themselves from doing this, unfortunately.

If they don’t work together to get at the crux of the issue of rising health care costs, I’m not sure that any plan that they put forth will be ideal. The pity of this is that it is possible, if they are willing to pick up their shovels dig through the muck and get to it.

I don't understand how any working class voter who pulled the lever for Trump could ever vote for a republican again after reading the contents of that absurd GOP healthcare bill that just got thrown out. Not only did it allow insurance companies to literally throw you on the street to rot; the bill also cut near $900,000,000,000 in funds annually from loving Medicaid. This single-handedly gave the blue wall/Rustbelt back to the democrats. The unparalleled greed of the Freedom Caucus and Koch bros are in part to thank here.

lol u think those voters will remember or care about it in 3 years?

dont get me wrong, i'm glad the republicans hosed up their repeal plans and embarrassed themselves. but the takeaway for the working class republican voters will not be that they dodged a bullet, but that they were right all along. they voted trump as a middle finger to the establishment and betting that republicans wouldn't really gently caress them over so blatantly, and now they won that bet. unless a democrat can make them believe that they will enact policies that directly benefit them, they might as well vote for the one that makes them feel better for being white

The story of rural/exurban life for the past 50 or so years has been the gradual decline of quality of life and a funnelling of wealth into cities via elites

Maybe that's why they've turned the republican party into one that runs on sheer spite

There's paycheck to paycheck toiling underclasses in large population centers too. They recognize them too, though their terms are "welfare queen" and "crack baby" and "urban thug"

So I don't feel too bad calling the Reaganite race warriors bigoted sponges of welfare dollars in return when statistically that's what they've been for 40 years. If they want to play the "well it's complicated" card they need to show some empathy first.

Don't infantilize them, they're adults and made a decision and let them own up to it. They wanted all this and to this day will justify voting for all this again in 2020 because of Obamaphones and "illegals"

Oh and they *WANT* wealth to funnel up to the top, they'll tell you as much

wealth that benefits a minority of a minority of the population of those cities, while the bulk of their inhabitants struggle to afford rapidly rising costs of living while working the same kind of lovely hourly service jobs and gig-work as rural whites

naked contempt is a zero-sum game in the united states; rural whites and republican voters didn't grow theirs purely in response to the mean ole liberals

basically this:

Epic High Five posted:

Don't infantilize them

they have exactly as much agency and responsibility as the underemployed white liberal twentysomethings and black working class who vote for democrats and hurl invective at republican voters, i.e. not much, but non-zero, which is what everyone has been trying to claim about the poor abused rural white since election day

Communism will help more white people than anyone else. Any equal measures unfairly provide less to minority populations just because there's less of them. Democracy is truly the tyranny of the mob.

Two things

1) Their willingness to write in a non-Trump/Clinton candidate, while ultimately useless in this election, might suggest good things about millennials - opposition to our lovely parties, commitment to the belief that serious change is needed, open-mindedness, their being informed enough to understand why both candidates wouldn't improve their lives, etc. Obviously it would've been better for them not to hand Republicans control of the whole government, but voting third-party, writing in Bernie, etc doesn't suggest only bad things.

Yes, BUT, it's not for reasons that will remain a trend or change anything. They went third party because both candidates sucked. Put one in that's what they want and they'll vote for whatever major party it is. Of course Johnson was a collosal moron too, so it's not like voting for that party was any better then the two main parties. If anything it proves millennials are just as loving stupid and gullible as everyone else
