The First of the Adorable Dead
I've just been playing Warmachine over the last month, but thats what my friends play and I've been really drat lazy getting my Dropfleet stuff together. Also I like Warmachine so that's fine with me. Sometimes I miss Warhammer Fantasy, my models are gaining dust due to neglect. But I have realized I don't really have time for multiple wargames so have not tried to branch out my warhammer stuff into KOW or 9th age.

Also people this is all nonsense stop trying to argue whether the thread is good or bad or whatever. The thread just is, sometimes its good and sometimes its bad, everyone has their own opinions on things. I mainly play one game simply because I lack the time to play more than one so I stick with my regular group. Others have the capacity to play multiple games. I have grievances with GW for what they did to my precious warhammer fantasy, and while that has resulted in me deciding to not give GW money that does not mean others can't. All this nonsense back and forth about the quality thread is just bringing the quality of the thread down. This thread 90% of the time is just about random miniature game related nonsense and making jokes when we thing GW does something dumb only amounts to a small portion of the the thread these days. Of course its going to draw out the anti gw crowd when the thread is trolled, I mean, that's what the trolls intended anyway. That is not evidence, however, that the tread is always like that.

I played some Necromunda and vanilla Kill Team. Both were a lot of fun. Necromunda was the most fun obviously. Really quite psyched for Shadow War Armageddon.

I bought into DFC/DZC and Infinity but i haven't played them yet.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

I don't really have a lot of time to play games any more between my work and my kids. Last weekend though my son wanted to know what I keep in all these dumb boxes I have so I opened them up and showed him all the miniatures I have in storage. He spent a good long time helping me unpack my ancient Eldar and the Ork army I never really got to play, mostly just trying to guess what stuff was in the same faction and sorting the vehicles/troops by type. Just sitting on the carpet pushing trucks and tanks around with my son is probably the best use I've gotten out of any of that stuff in five years.

-Warmachine, at 0, 25 and 75 points.

I had fun with all the games at all the point levels :)

Flames of War (v3 and v4)
Team Yankee
AoS
Infinity
Chain of Command
Spearhead
Dropfleet Commander
X-Wing

And a couple of playtests at my club. Was meant to play some Frostgrave but that didn't work out.

Of those, v4 and AoS I didn't have a lot of fun with (AoS was with points; they did not fix anything from when I first played). TY is fun but I'm concerned with the long term viability of it, since it looks like the soviets fit a very narrow mould and in addition to "paint a hundred stands of infantry" type issues it means they're pretty easy to play towards beating.

If you ever get around to playing Infinity I would suggest tracking down your local warcor and getting them to walk you through your first game or two.

There is a pretty steep learning curve, but once you get it everything clicks. They use a core of common rules, so it's possible to logic your way through most things except for weird corner cases.

I would personally also have the wiki open on a smartphone or table, if possible; it's definitely gotten me through my first couple of games. The army builder app links direct to it, so that's useful if you're new to the game (or the list you're playing) and need to check what your dudes are doing mid-game.

Also you should probably play with lists as if everything was open; it's not technically RAW but I personally feel like there's no real reason it shouldn't be because you're either relying on your opponent being A: new or B: too distracted to notice 30-50 points missing from your list and checking the army builder for what it is, and the former case is definitely a thing to avoid when introducing someone to the game.

Kings of War, one (1) time. It's really hard to get into the mood of playing a miniatures game when I can just play a board game instead. Better gameplay, easier setup, faster games, more interesting decisions and they're way cheaper to boot. You can get entire goddamn games for less than the price of single box of space chucklefucks for your army. YMMV depending on the specific games.

The warcasters cost negative points because you're required to have a certain number of them and they bring varying points values of free robots along. So X number of warcasters and only the free robots in their crew.

40k diehards want to know why death thread participants won't admit GW is awesome now, right?

I was a big GW fan through the 90's and dropped out of the wargaming hobby around 2000 when I went to uni, which happens to be about the time most people consider GW to have gone into decline. I played and tried to collect for pretty much every game GW was putting out up to then.

I came back to wargaming 2 years or so ago a bit before AoS landed. I took a look at what GW was doing and it was depressing, most the things I liked about GW seemed long gone or in sorry state. Since then I have noted improvement, or at least the attempt to improve.

AoS launched poorly but GW seem to be attempting course correction and revision of the game to address short comings.

GW have begun reaching out to their communities again. Like a modern company.

GW appear more willing to admit that they have competition and that maybe their games should be better to play. AoS was I think an ambitious experiment and 40k 8th edition is being touted as a significant attempt to fix the game rather than just flog some books.

GW are reviving fan favourite licences that should never have been dropped. Blood Bowl. Necromunda (kinda). Epic (maybe, kinda).

These are all signs that GW is trying to right the ship.

But I am still not going to be won back, and that is because they aren't hitting the right notes for me.

Their modern aesthetic isn't my bag. I find the poses generally awkward and most models are over wrought with excessive details. They are not clean and dynamic, I find them clunky and muddled. I gather they are produced to a high standard, but I just don't find them all that attractive. This is of course subjective and you may disagree.

While I think AoS was a bold attempt to innovate, it did come at the cost of losing the most established fantasy mass battles game in the industry and the butchering of its lore (as Tolkien derivative as it might have been). GW could have launched AoS as a wholly new property pitched at whatever scale AoS is meant to be played at and moved WFB over to specialist games status. I think we all agree this transition could have been done better.

40k is seemingly rolling the clock back to 2nd edition. This isn't moving forwards.

Necromunda appealed to me for its setting and aesthetic. It's rules I feel have been surpassed by other games in the past 20 years. The new title drops everything I liked about Necromunda but reportedly retains those old rules apparently unchanged.

I have recently been throwing out my old GW rule books as I felt they just are not games that I would choose to play over cleaner and more polished modern rule sets. And yet GW are heading right back to them. If that was what I wanted, I could have played it at any time in the last 20 years, so how is this moving forwards?

But I have played a bunch of Carcassonne (the best game) and Tokaido (the second best game), plus a bit of Robo Rally (the third best game). I'm also starting a V:tM game set in the Seattle grunge scene in the early 90s so that should be fun. Having not touched Vampire before aside from a single game session when I was like 12, I have to say it hits a lot of the right notes for me mechanically.

I can confirm that Robo Rally is a fantastic game. You have to make sure the checkpoints force the players to crisscross each other, though - if you mark out a course that doesn't do that, someone will randomly get a lead and then never be catchable and the game will be boring.

I still have a lot of nostalgia for the core settings of 40k/Fantasy especially from when I was a kid. I still play HoR Killteam because I enjoy using the minis I have to do stuff in the 40k universe. But the issue is that we're supposed to be won back to GW because they are doing baby steps towards doing things that every other big company is already doing in spades, and in most cases these are THINGS GW USED TO DO. They have a decade long history of exiling any rules designers that actually want to change their games in ways that accept modern design standards, and all those people who they kicked out have gone on to make better games so even though they show enthusiasm for maybe fixing some of their rules issues I don't trust their ability to hang on to anyone with enough skill and design sense to actually accomplish this, It doesn't help that their game is so god drat expensive. It cost too much a decade ago when troop boxes were ~30 dollars. The fact that tac squads are 40 dollars is loving insane. Every time I consider about maybe getting back into 40k I just look at exactly how I could buy most of an army for Infinity, Malifaux, Bolt Action or Guildball for the cost of just the rulebooks I'd need to play 40k and my desire is entirely gone.
