Mikey Purp posted:Through the lens of pure storytelling I don't think it was that lovely because it puts the character through a crisis of faith and also plays into some of the things about Merle that Clint talked about in TTAZZ i.e. being insecure about his place and value to the group. From a DMing perspective, I think that you have to take into account your players before making decisions like this and I imagine that Griffin feels pretty comfortable with how Clint will adapt. Also I have no doubt that this is all going to culminate into a situation which somehow catapults Merle into a position of very high importance where he's the only one who can save the world or some such. That is a very careful balancing act, and while I trust Griffin to pull it off in a mostly satisfactory way, it is plain old bad GMing to take away the character's core abilities for long stretches of the game. Putting them into a tight spot where they have to work outside of their comfort zone? Sure, that's cool. That is sorta what Griffin did with Magnus and his mannequin body. But what's been going on with Merle has been happening for a while.

Just let go of the presumption that this is in any way a D&D game. It's a story being told with some improvisational bits with a dash of dice-roll decision making.

If it was a standard D&D game it's definitely worth worrying about, but it's mainly a vehicle for storytelling now -- and even if it wasn't, the boys and their dad trust each other a lot to not gently caress each other over cruelly for no reason. Trust goes a long way.

It would be cool if Merle got some wicked sick magic-arm and/or eye upgrades to help him just kick all kinds of rear end. Like putting the Phoenix Fire Gauntlet on the end of his arm and his eyepatch trades out for the Oculus, since they've been drained they could have more balanced powers now. It's a bit silly/over-the-top but it would be an apropos transition into a Clint-run supers game.

Ariong posted:Okay, got another one for ya. Merle has been a Pannite since he was a kid, having come from a religious family. However, now we know that that family does not come from this world. Did the last planar system also have a Pan? Forgive me if I'm misremembering because I've only listened through the series once, but didn't Merle switch deities to Pan very early on? I thought he was affiliated with someone else and only switched to Pan at their first level-up on the moonbase after Gerblins? I know they messed with this because the first Maxfun TAZ bonus prequel where they first took on the quest has Merle trying to preach the good word sans Xtreme Teen Bible, but I didn't know if they retconned it entirely.

Yeah I'm fully expecting something like this or Merle becomes the ultimate Pokemon Master as every god still in existence starts channeling their power through him and he just summons SHITLOADS of angels/demons/etc. to fight the Hunger

They retconned it so he's always worshipped Pan, yeah.

Yeah, it's a straight up and down retcon. Just pretend that Merle has been worshipping Pan his whole life, especially since he didn't really call on his old god during Gerblins at all, and also doesn't even remember his name

You're not hearing the whole DnD game, just the parts you're supposed to hear.

And I also believe it when Griffin said in TTAZZ 2 that he doesn't just tell them what to do or what is going to happen. But I also know that pulling what he's done to Merle isn't something I would do to a player without asking, and if it happened to me with no checking in I'd be pretty unhappy. That said if the player in question were my dad it would probably be okay. If your dad is playing D&D with you he's most likely gonna be chill.

I thought it was Ogma. EDIT: And I've always been hoping that Griffin would find an excuse to grill Justin on that, because I want to hear him struggle to remember which god he worships in character as Taako.

Oghma is the Forgotten Realms deity that Justin said he worshiped in a joke that he forgot within 10 minutes.

He made Clint without really giving a poo poo at first, and then made something that was more a character he'd want to play once it got serious. I also remember someone saying that Merle and Taako were just renamed beginner characters from the box. Can't blame them for changing poo poo and not remembering.

Yeah, only Magnus is 100% homegrown PC, Merle and Taako are modified versions of characters that came pre-rolled in the starter kit. I think Merle's vanilla god was Marthammor Duin, something like that? All I remember is that one of the first pieces of fan-art was a red-haired, stockier Merle with a hammer that said 'In it to Duin It' E: found Merle's old god's name

Redbubble is one of those print-on-demand websites where you can turn your art into t-shirts and posters and make money! Except there's like no fact-checking whatsoever so it consists of 40% stolen fanart, 50% regular copyright infringement, and 10% legitimate art. Anyway they have a whole bunch of MBMBaM and TAZ stuff up right now.
