I personally believe as a a Jew (a Jewish rabbi to boot) who mostly hung out with other Jews, Jesus probably considered the Old Testament to be pretty authoritative text. Like as a historical document at the least even if he discarded the laws.

Big shock that the guy who hasn't read the single most important book in Western canon fails to comprehend the meaning of a big-boy word. And yes, as Christ does. Otherwise you might as well adhere to tradition above the service of others like the Jews he criticizes who are not the same as contemporary Jews who are all irreproachable people. I mean, if you discard the OT you would know almost nothing about God. Also, is Christ God, or the son of God(whatever that means)? You seem to have a totally different set of beliefs from practically every christian doctrine. Even the most liberal Christian creeds consider the OT to have historical value, and God's behavior in the OT indicates a morality aligned more closely to Ghenghis Khan than anyone today.

I'm not going to read the bible to you because that would be like casting pearls before swine. Everything I have said is explicitly stated in the NT. Every Christian I have ever met understands this. "Cast pearls before swine" is such a terrible sentence (also Paul did not ignore the OT, neither did almost literally any christian church, ever)

This whole line of argument is also kinda pointless because it's utterly meaningless from the point of view of "do christian churches have a tendency to lurch very far to the right, in general" to which the answer is broadly yes, with a few exceptions. And not only have I read the NT, I have read the OT including the parts that are only roman catholic canon, seeing how I was in a catholic school

Maybe instead of insults you might actually answer a question - is the OT a historical document according to Christians or not? I've read the New and Old Testament many times. Don't know if your branch of Christianity had a confirmation school or not, but we basically spent a month doing nothing but reading the Bible, that on top of the times I have read it on my own because I do consider it the most important book in the Western culture I also happen to be a part of. And my particular branch of Christianity certainly thinks that the Old Testament isn't a fable. DarkCrawler fucked around with this message at 12:07 on Apr 5, 2017 |

This might amaze you but the catholic church has a bit of a history with fascism and there are very few fascist dictatorships they didn't actively provide moral support to, including a few nazi puppet states. Protestant churches also have a history of broadly opposing revolutionary movements and of being largely creatures of the state. Canadian mennonites actually used to publish nazi literature almost all the way to the war. Religion is ultimately an institutional power structure, personal spirituality is a modern phenomenon and even Tolstoy's christian mysticism was opposed by official religious institutions.

I gotta admit something, though: there is one thing that is the product of religion that is pretty good (if you ignore the message, but it's not that hard since it's in Latin): Vivaldi's Stabat Mater sung by a counter-tenor.
