This feels akin to saying the only way to adapt a book is to have lots of words on the screen

I dunno I just think it'd work with that style, otherwise you're just making generic war movies with the CoD branding. I haven't played many CoD games but I remember a Modern Warfare or two and it feels like it was all about elaborate over the top POV cinema bullshit.
I still think Hardcore Henry was the most successful adaptation of a video game ever, even if there was no video game involved. I mean you've got your respawning NPCs giving mini tutorials and your plot directly led by "GO TO THIS GPS COORDINATE ON THE MAP FOR ANOTHER ACTION SET PIECE", your recharging energy, your completely shallow plot with random sci-fi elements thrown in, your THIS IS YOUR WIFE, FEEL THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTION??? YOU MUST AVENGE HER.
it's super video game.

I get what u mean but I think the experience of playing most games is pretty divorced both from the literal plot as well as what's happening on the screen. Call of Duty isn't fun because of the plot or the fact that ur mowing down races of all creeds & religions etc. but because the actual, mechanical feeling of playing is satisfying. Obviously there's appeal in the fact that left-trigger right-trigger means u get to see a man wearing too much gear go down in a mist of blood in front of the Burger Town but @ the same time the visual representation of your actions in games is always going to be divorced from what you're doing as a player. Like nobody thinks playing Madden & pressing "B" to pass is akin to the experience of being a quarterback despite all the superficial elements being recreated totally faithfully.

The first person gimmick of Hardcore Henry wad easily the weakest part of it, I would have much rather had a traditional movie about Sharlto Copley's body-hopping scientist since he was far and away the best and most entertaining part of the movie.

I was going to make a comment about Red Faction, but realized that I don't think that Total Recall was filmed using revolutionary Geo-Mod technology, so any comparison is obviously false.

Hardcore Henry is legitimately the best video game movie ever made and it's not even based on a video game (although it obviously takes inspiration from some) and just a fun as gently caress movie in general.

More movies need to be as ballsy and creative and cool as Hardcore Henry.

French language films don't tend to do so well in the US. The top 4 are:

Amelie (2001): $33m
La Cage aux Folles (1979): $20m
Brotherhood of the Wolf (2002): $11m
La Vie en Rose (2007): $10m

The Artist (2011) racked up $44m in the US and is technically a French film with French stars and a French director and French financing even though it was shot in LA.
