This game really impressed me with the characterization of Joker between the lines. You get this sort of show-off and confidence that I didn't really feel stand out with the last two protagonists with the game. You can play it up as a "thief of justice", a smarmy jerk, or a reluctant near-delinquent, or mix and match all of them (which I did). And the Confidant stories do convincingly for me tell a story where he evolves from being way out of his element into a master planner, which makes the game's several late-game plot points feel all the meaningful. E: It doesn't hurt that Arsene is the best starting Persona ever and (ending spoilers) Satanael is the best end game Persona. Also in general the personality the Personas get in their awakening scenes are ace. This game thematically also is far more interesting and thoughtful in how it apply the Major Arcana, I feel. You actually get to see "a fool has all his tools" and the game uses callbacks constantly that are meaningful. All of the confidants are tied in by game mechanics and theme as outsiders that the Phantom Thieves collect around them. The weakest one to me (Fortune) still feels like it ties all together and nothing feels extraneous, which is a problem I have with Persona 3 and Persona 4. I'm gonna miss casino night zone. So far I've been really disappointed that none of the heists have been on the level of the second palace. I loved seeing the party members working as a team in separate areas to pull off the theft.

So uh, I guess Network Fusion can give you Personas with a higher base level than your own. What is that actually doing? Randomly pairing me with someone online and fusing the two Persona we put up, giving us both the result?

The fact that the english version of the Maid Teacher's "Becky" voice sounds enough like her Yukari voice from P3 that I did a double take at first just makes me assume that this is an AU where her modeling career never took off.

Since the game takes place in media res does that mean every time you gameover or die it's basically the main character looking Sae in the face and going "I died. Yep. Something totally killed me." The implication is kind of funny if so.

So I'm thirty odd hours or so in and have cleared the second palace. I'm enjoying it a lot, but I have a few nitpicks. - Whenever you gain a social stat, it still annoys me that the game feels the need to not only first imply what went up ("I feel smarter after pointing out those two lines are connected!"), but then open up the Social Stats screen, SHOW the points going into the stat, and then SAY that that stat went up. It just feels unnecessary, especially when at least Persona 4 did just fine simply saying the stat increased. - I think it's kind of silly that defending suddenly needs confirmation, but you're more than welcome to accidentally waste a turn if you hit X and swing your weapon at that dude who gets healed by knife wounds or something. This is more of a user thing though, after being used to the more traditional menu style of the last game. I'll get used to it. - I'm still not sure how I feel about Morgana tagging along with you everywhere. He basically takes the place of the second person narration boxes in the previous games. He doesn't annoy me (yet), but I'm just glad he hasn't butted in to any of the social links that I've done so far, which was what I was kind of afraid of. -As a whole, compared to the last one, it feels like this one took much, much longer to actually get going as far as opening up and letting you start building social stats/ Otherwise, It's very solid, and was worth the several years it took to release, in my opinion.
