Woopee, they're literally opening the camps now.

"Russian newspapers and human rights groups report that more than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such” as part of a purge. Several people were also reportedly feared dead following violent raids.

In a chilling response, a Chechen government spokesperson denied that there are any gay people to detain, insisting that “you can’t detain and harass someone who doesn’t exist in the republic”. The Kremlin denied any knowledge of a purge."

Also would you look at that, a bunch of comments that look like they only care because it's another chance to scream about the mooselimbs.

Yeah, a link got posted in the Freep thread, and it's mostly split between "I will stand up for gays as long as I get to hate on brown people", "See, The Gays, this is REAL oppression, not me calling you names and refusing to bake you wedding cakes :smug:", and "Now while I wouldn't normally side with moose limbs, you have to agree that this is the inevitable conclusion to the horror of gay acceptance."

No, it doesn't. We need a video campaign urging people to stand up for their rights because it does not "get better" without voices being heard and action being taken, and even then, it's still so difficult and unrewarding and actually dangerous that I break down in tears just thinking about what queer kids are going through.
At least when I was a kid, it was all so closeted that I didn't even know enough to be ashamed until I was legally an adult. Now, you have the Internet giving you hope on one hand and taking it away on the other. Adults going after children to further an agenda without a true care in the world for how it hurts them because, as far as they see it, it is for their own good.
"It gets better." Look at Russia, Uganda, and now the Trump administration (I think Trump gives no fucks, but everybody else has an agenda and it includes making us not exist).
That's the thing. Tennessee is wanting to say kids have to go to the bathroom of the gender on their birth certificate. At the same time that Tennessee as explicit exclusions from changing gender on birth certificates for anything that has to do with being transgender. They want us to not exist.
I am not ashamed, but I am terrified.

That campaign was aimed at kids in high school in lovely regressive places and sought to tell them that there are cooler, better places, and they can absolutely be happy fulfilled people when they grow up. Don't minimize that message just because you aren't, or are no longer, its target market.

Not that urging action isn't just as vital, of course.

Gosh I love the new improved post-Obama Fourth Circuit. I had the privilege of watching oral arguments there when one of the last big gay marriage cases went through a few years ago, and it was quite pleasant listening to an older, Clinton-appointed black judge absolutely ream the attorneys arguing for the ban by echoing all the ways they sounded just like people trying to keep interracial marriage illegal.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A bill filed Tuesday in the state House would outlaw same-sex marriage in North Carolina and refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

According to House Bill 780, the state would declare that the federal government is not legally authorized to regulate marriage. Therefore, the state's 2012 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage would remain in effect.

Here's another article about the gay men being rounded up by Washington Post

quote:

The crusading newspaper Novaya Gazeta published a startling article April 1 that reported Mr. Kadyrov’s armed thugs were detaining and executing gay men, with more than 100 men already seized, three of them known to be dead and many others possibly murdered in extrajudicial “honor” killings. A respected human rights expert, Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya, Russia project coordinator for the International Crisis Group, told the New York Times and the Guardian that she had been receiving similar reports.

This is absolutely appalling. Anyone who ignores this kind of widespread and systematic, I hate to say abuse, say instead persecution and torture, of a vulnerable minority simply because of some misguided both sides reasoning, or worse, simply because they don't think it's politically convenient to care, is thoroughly betraying their principles and those on whose behalf they are supposedly organizing.

It also makes no loving sense. The Chechen Republic has a lot of differences with Russia, there were the whole wars and stuff, and all the news articles are talking about Chechnya rounding up gay men, not Russia. So even if you wanted to white knight Putin due to dumb badly formed tankie thought and excuse the homophobia in the rest of the Federation with whataboutism you could still say something like "Russia is not killing gay men, the Chechens are."

Dear god, how are there more Jullian Assanges. posted:

For US people, regarding Chechnya.
Here's what I know:
1. The information is currently inconclusive. The only media outlet that claims to have investigated this issue is not a very reliable one, and has reported false and/or embellished information in the past.
2. There is an extreme problem with homophobia and transphobia in Chechnya. It certainly permeates everything including the government's ideology.
3. US politicians, islamophobes and russophobes on the ground in the US are using this as a pretext to put out some disturbing calls. Similarly to pro-intervention calls regarding Syria, messaging is appearing calling on the US government to "do something about" Chechnya (really, Russia, they mean). 50 US congresspeople just signed a declaration against this possible problem in Chechnya. They did not do that because they care about LGBTQ people. They did it because they got something they could use as an easy pretext for Russophobia.
4. There are currently 32 states in the US with zero codified protections for LGBTQ people. The Trump administration aims to have that number grow. The Democratic Party will not do anything to stop the trend.
5. Both the Republicans and Democrats do not care about LGBTQ people in the US. They certainly do not care about LGBTQ people in Chechnya. They want to use our community to drum up support for sanctions and war. They've done this before. If you actually believe the Trump administration can or will actually initiate something positive to help Chechen and Russian LGBTQ people (we are talking Brown Muslims here) you need to sit down and do some thinking.
6. Do not expect liberal politicians to initiate anything positive either. The entire line of the Democratic Party in recent years has been to "go hard on Russia". That means sanctions and war. That means Russian people, including Russian LGBTQ people, dying.
What to do:
1. Allow people on the ground to investigate and report back further. The current information is insufficient and something of this magnitude needs to be verified and organized against very carefully so as not to endanger more people, whether or not it is true.
2. Vocally oppose homophobia and transphobia here. Organize against the US government's acts of aggression against LGBTQ people here. Don't let yourself be distracted from your primary fight.
3. Vocally oppose war, imperialism and russophobia.
4. Meet and support Chechen and Russian LGBTQ people (sup!). Help initiate forums on pinkwashing and anti-imperialist international LGBTQ solidarity. Make sure Russian and Chechen voices are at the forefront, but be aware that, like with any other demographic, there are many Russian and Chechen voices that are acting as supporters of nefarious US activity.
5. Do not stage protests "against Russian homophobia" in the US. That's already happening in Russia. We can do our own work -- you do yours. Protests here are a message to the US government. Protests against Russia here are a call on the US government to attack Russia.
6. If you want to stage a public action, make your messaging clear: Stand with LGBTQ people all over the world. Stand against US war. Don't let our communities be used as a pretext for imperialism.

I had totally forgotten the "All Live Matter" Part at the end there. This pisses me off so much and is why I am leery of a lot of the far left Marxists and socialists in general. It seems like a lot of them are demanding their pet causes come first and everything else is a distraction.

i honestly wonder how many of the people in leftist circles saying "russiaphobia" in response to democratic inquiries about trump's russian ties are kremlin plants trying to dismantle any grassroots attempts at organizing by making it seem "problematic" or something.

like don't get me wrong "we gotta bomb this country to protect the citizens of that country" is a tried and true banner to go to war on but for real letting that get in the way of actually calling attention to what is most likely a real thing that is happening (because this is a country run by a man who made people who attended a party he lost his watch at come back to insure they hadn't stolen it, which was like 2,000 people and included children) is preeeetty hosed up

There's also a strong undercurrent of nationalism in Eastern Europe: Admitting to your country having done something wrong would be tantamount to saying that, possibly, your heritage is not the most superior one in the world (which is constantly and unfairly put upon by pernicious external influences, which one must constantly be on guard against) and, well, that would just be intolerable.

No problem. For what it's worth, I've also dealt with tankies from communist countries (or I suppose you could term them "true believers" if you prefer) -- I had a Cuban friend who had studied in the USSR, and even though he lived in Canada for quite a time he was still a very big fan of communism, Stalinism and everything else. He eventually left to work in Venezuela, presumably on Chavez's socialist paradise. I have no idea what he's doing now (I haven't heard from him since Chavez died).

Funny story: apparently if you were trying to reach him in Cuba, because three people named Ivan used his phone line, you were to ask for "Crazy Ivan" to reach him. He came by that nickname honestly...

"Mr Duncan revealed that he spoke directly to his counterpart, Russia’s deputy foreign secretary Vladimir Titov, to challenge the Russian Federation on human rights abuses against LGBT people.
British Embassy representatives have also spoken directly to the Russian government to raise the issue. However a spokesperson for Vladimir Putin has said the Russian president has no reason to believe the attacks are genuine.
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s Press Secretary, claimed that investigators have found no evidence to support reports of the purge, which originated in respected newspaper Novaya Gazeta, according to Associated Press."

"This week, Putin had a meeting with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who told the Russian president not to believe the “provocative” articles. He also accused international organisations of conducting a “massive information attack using the most unworthy methods, reality is distorted, attempts are being made to blacken our society, lifestyle, traditions and customs.” A spokesperson for Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov has previously denied there are any gay people to purge, insisting that “you can’t detain and harass someone who doesn’t exist in the republic”."
